Cracked Rover Engine Mount

Discovered this afternoon that the nearside engine mount on my Rover-engined Sumo is cracked (has obviously cracked before and been very poorly welded up).

Does any one know if it is possible to replace the engine mount without removing the engine from the car?

Regards

RE: Cracked Rover Engine Mount

Hi,

Not exactly what your after but :-

I know you can do it with the chevy, We had to do it a few times when we first fitted the engine (put the mounts on wrong first time :'( ) still need something to take the wieght and we had to disconnect all the mounting (3 pieces) from block (as a whole) then from the footplate mounting on chassis.

I know this is for a chevy, but it may help to guide a possible solution.

Don't know about the Sumo but on my Rover / AK it will be straightforward to change either engine mount.

Again, its not from a Rover but for a Chevy.

Use a manifold lifting eye, it bolts on where the carb goes and really makes for easier lifting than a load of rope. You should be able to raise the engine, depending on how much room you have to work with from the bellhousing to the chassis or body enough to make changes to the mounts.

RE: Cracked Rover Engine Mount

I have Rover-based Sumo and I think Rob's advice makes sense. Even if you don't have a lifting eye, you could just rope up the engine and lift it on a hoist. You should have a couple of inches spare to raise the engine, and get old bracket out and new one in without much effort. The older style engine mounts were a bit crap, but I have the newer universal types fitted and they look much beefier.

Suggest you disconnect everything (fuel-line, plumbing earths and other electrics) before lifting in case the movement busts anything.

RE: Cracked Rover Engine Mount

I took the mount of of my engine little while ago to elongate the slots so that I could push the engine to the left to make more room from the oil filter. Its not difficult I just put a large piece of wood under the sump and took the weight with my trolly Jack . I know all about the risk of damaging the cork gasket but most of the weight is still on the other mount and the gearbox. Then you just unbolt it and lift it out as a complete unit brackets and rubber mounts. Dont try to lift the engine and rubber mount away from the chassis bracket is will only jam.You have to undo seven bolts in all and it can be lifted clear.Tt might be worhtwile cuttinf a hole in the inner wing for access and then filling it up after . When I did the innerwings weren't fitted . Good luck

RE: Cracked Rover Engine Mount

Sideoiler,
Many thanks for the comments and the photos. I was thinking along the "trolley jack" line myself so I am glad you confirm the method.

Unfortunately have now discovered the problem is more serious. The engine mount had cracked and been welded up by a previous owner. This I knew already so when I investigated the odd noises on Saturday and saw the engine moving in its mount, I assumed that this had cracked again. However, looking more closely I find that what has actually happened is that the bracket which is welded to the chassis (to which the Rover mount bolts) has pulled away from the chassis rail. As a result it looks like I am stuck with a complete engine/gearbox removal to gain proper access. Whilst I have got it out I will however take the opportunity to beef it up (looks very flimsy in retrospect) and replace the existing welded up mount at the same time.

Best Regards and thanks again

RE: Cracked Rover Engine Mount

I to had a problem with sumo engine mounts cracking ,the first was the off side which cracked within 750 miles which was duly modified with box section welded to it.I thought to myself I must reinforced the other side to prevent it cracking.Anyway 4500 miles later the oil pressure relief valve stuck open so whilst removing the offending article I had a nose round underneath as you do .It was then that I noticed the crack in the other engine mount which I hadn't got round to modifying see pics .The original modification has proved itself so far and hopefully this is the end of the saga for myself. The engine doesn't need removing just raising with a trolley jack and apiece of wood under the sump to remove the engine mounts.
