Rover V8 Water Pump

hmmm. I'm making regular trips between the PC and Workshop - I may as well get everything reconnected straght to my workbench My next query is regarding the size of the Water pump - I have a lump from an old range rover and still have the water pump.

The problem is it has a fairly large neck on it and thus the pulley would be hindered by the steering rack.

As I see it, I have several options available. I could move the engine back by 3-4" but would end up eating into the Battery shelf (And due to a lack of hoist - probably break my back). Or I could try finding a slimer water pump. The timing cover I have is likewise for the rangerover and am unsure if I can fit an alternative pump to it?

Oh - one other bit of info - It's a sumo Chassis...

I've sent a few emails to RPI & Rimmer Bros but the people who seem to know about the engines are either too busy or on Holiday already.

Any help appreciated.

Regards

RE: Rover V8 Water Pump

If your engine has no dizzy then it is a late model and to change the front cover you would also need a new cam and to modify the end of the crank.

If it has a dizzy then there is a water pump available for "kit cars" or alternatively fit a water pump from an SD1 as these are OK. THe water pump from an SD1 may not fit into the front cover from the RR, but the SD1 front cover should fit without any bother.

Ajmac site has a good section on what is interchangeable between the different engine models.

RE: Rover V8 Water Pump

Dan - from memory, I am sure I had to mod the water pump on my old car to stop the end of the shaft from colliding with a crossmember. Not sure what the situation is on current Sumo's, but as far as I know the engine does sit farther forward on a Sumo than most.

If you get a copy of Real Steel's catalogue (01895 440505) there are some dimensioned illustrations of different pumps which should help you.
ALso try a private message or email to Bob, who must have overcome the same problem.

RE: Rover V8 Water Pump

Thanks for the links.

It's a shame - I have had the engine put together for me - and it's too late now to change the front cover - If only I knew of this potential problem before the event. My only hope I guess is to find a slimline pump for the range rover fittment - I'll take a look through those links...

RE: Rover V8 Water Pump

Hello there,

I'm not sure which part is going to foul. The only thing I can think of is the front pully and the chassis crossmember. I've just been out to the garage and found out that the Range Rover front pully is actually shorter than our vitesse one.

I'm interested in this because we are building a Sumo with a Range Rover engine.

Pulley's Used...

Thanks for the reference to The Real steal catalog - I dragged i out and found the page you referenced. Found several waterpumps but most of which will no fit the Range rover timing cover I have. The Standard waterpump I have is 4.48" to the pulley mounting - Which is where I was previously asuming the belt would attach. I then decided to have a look at the Pilgrim Build manual and found a picture that illistrated the tightness of fit of the Rover engine against the steering rack to realise that the pulley used on the water pump actual concaves back on it's self by about 1" - I had a quick look through my pulley box and have found 2 pulleys that when lined up against the block look like they might do the trick...

May I rephrase the initial question to 'What size pulleys are on your Rover V8?'

I've noticed that Ford Engines are entitled to Chrom'ie type pulley's - Can Rover engines also utilise such prestigious luxuries as well?

As ever all points greatfully received...

RE: Pulley's Used...

Chrome, Billet ally, - you name it you can have it. All depends on the depth of your pockets and how far you wish to dress up that V8!! Remember that a Rover V8 is an honorary Ford anyway.

Have fun

RE: Rover V8 Water Pump

Thanks Bob for the Radiator upsound down info.. The Build manual also neglects a few other major points... The Bottom hose does go towards the drivers side of the car as you suggested - Did RPI provide the pulleys for the crank and water pump for you? if not could you let me know where you sourced them from - I also noticed in you photo you have the Cobra covers - are they by chance Ford covers with an adaptor plate? do you still have details of where you sourced them also...

Sorry to be a bug - but I am spending most my time sourcing stuff instead of building :'( so any help appreciated...

Thanks

RE: Rover V8 Water Pump

I just used the pulleys that came with the knackered engine I started with. What do you need I may have a few bit left in the garage there may be a water pump pulley I will have to look. The rocker covers are advertised in Snake Torque If you not a club member its worth joining for 25 quid. They come from called John Hammomd 01268 710083 and fit straight to a Rover without adaptor plates.

RE: Rover V8 Water Pump

Dan.
You need to put the engine with just enough room between the Fly wheel pulley and the cross member to allow you to gt he belt off . Any further back and you will rin into big clearnce problems at the back. It is a bit tight up the front end and you will need to cut and shut hoses but it will fit. I used a 92 Land Rover Engine from RPI but the timing cover and Pump were SD1. Does your bottom hose connection exit to the Drivers side if it does then in combination with a Sierra 2.3 Diesel radiator fitted upside down and that important cos the manual doesnt mention that you need to fit it upsidedown wil work That how I did mine and how Pilgrim build their cars.Ive attached a photo that shows the front end without the body on I hope it helps.
