How mount the clutch to a Rover V8 ?

I'm fitting a new clutch to my Rover powered Dax. The workshopmanual says I need to use a seperate shaft to position the clutch to the flywheel. I do not have such a shaft. Does anyone know a different way to do this ?

Regards,

Arjen Vink

Hi Arjen.
you could do with a clutch alignment tool, available through car accesory shops.
Or if the engine and box are out of the car ,remove the bell housing and use the gearbox its self to line things up...you will need to support the gearbox while you do this so as not to damage the bearings...two strong friends should do the trick.Otherwise you can line it up by eye,by looking through the centre of the clutch into the end of the crank and finely adjusting untill it looks like it is in the centre, then tighten up the 6 bolts and offer up the gearbox,if it goes on ok ,well done ,if it doesn't...try again, and again until it does.
Good luck

Vince,

If you've got an AC Cobra I would hardly imagine that a seven quid on an alignment tool is going to be a problem, I smell something and it begins with an 'B'. :7

Though if you spent 7 quid on every tool you would only need once it'll soon get pretty expensive. I have a 5K engine but buying an alignment tool just for this never really crossed my mind. On my first attempt I used a socket extension which did just fine (in fact it could have been made for the job!), on my second I got RPi to do it for me with a spare gearbox shaft they had.
Incidently I was quite alarmed to find that the new self-centring release bearing is plastic!!

RE: How mount the clutch to a Rover V8 ?

I've not got my kit yet. I will be collecting it early Feb.

It's an AK not an AC... I wish.

Trouble Is I don't know how to correct it my profile.

I did do the tape thing and it worked. Didn't realise that the alignment tool was only 7 quid though. I have bought quite a bit of stuff recently that I may only use once.

Engine Stand, Piston Ring Compressor, I'll have to ask in the other forums if anyone near to me in Leeds has a Brake Pipe Flairing tool...

RE: How mount the clutch to a Rover V8 ?

Hi Arjen.

I was doing the very same thing last night.

Basicaly the clutch alignment tool is two circles of Steel. One goes inside the end of the crankshaft and then the clutch needs to be centralised in relation to this.

I made a tool like the one pictured with a large Philips Screwdriver and insulating tape. Simply wrap tape around the screwdriver until it just fits into the end of the crank. (see picture below)

Then do the same again so that the tape at "B" on the drawing just fits inside the clutch preasure plate.

Fit the whole lot in place and then fit your cover plate.

Worked OK for me. OK so I wasted about a half a roll of insulating tape but it's better than shelling out for a clutch alignment tool that you would use only once.
