Holley Carb Attachments .

As any of you who use this Forum regularly will realise - I am installing my Engine, And I'm by no means a mechanic

I think I just about under stand the principle of the Clutch conversion - so thanks to all who helped. I'm waiting of the cable to be delivered so no doubt I will contact with any problems...

I thought I'd plan ahead a bit so instead of posting a vast amount of seperate posts and filling up the forum I will try to condense:

o I have a Holley carb with a brake Vacum outlet - What pipe can I use to connect this to my Sierra servo? In the many moves my kit has made I have lost the old hose that fitted. Will I need to get another Sierra one and Adapt?

o With The Holley I got an Accelerator Cable - but the end of this that fits the pedal has a round bead on where as the sierra cable had a cup on the end - Would people recommend I adjust the pedal to accept the Holley cable or adjust the Sierra cable to fit the Holley carb?

o The Choke cable - This isn't a problem but where would you recommend this gets situated? On the Dash? or hidden away under the dash?

0 On a slightly different note, I have read somewhere that when wiring loom goes through the bulk head a Grommet must be fitted. I have notice Europa sell a plastic split conduit(tube) that wraps around the cables to protect them - If I used a product like this (say 1.5" to 1" for the main loom run from inside the bulk head to the engine bay) would I still need a grommet?

o On a seriously different note, Would any one know of a company in the London Area that does good quality chrome plating at affordable rates?

Thanks All!

RE: Holley Carb Attachments .

Hi Dan - can't answer all your questions, but will do my best on most.

1/ You should use the correct vacuum line hose to connect the vacuum take off from the carb to the servo - any old hose won't do as it will collapse under the vacuum. Any decent motor factors should sort you out, just have an idea of what bore size you need.

2/ Accelerator cables are whatever you want - mine is actully a mountain bike brake cable! Whatever you use, make sure you can get a (cheap) replacement in the future, as throttle cables have a tendancy to break occasionally. Try not to use one with a stainless inner cable - you can't solder the end up to stop it fraying if you should need to cut it to length.

3/ Choke - Hmmm, many people do away with them altogether - certainly there is no trace of one left on my own Edelbrock carb, and I have had no trouble starting the beast even recently with our sub zero temperatures. If you decide to go ahead and keep it, why not fit the thing out of sight under the dash - arrange it for a good straight cable run. On the other hand, some folks leave them in plain view on their dashboards - a matter of taste. If you do fit it somewhere, remember to give it a sturdy mounting, as choke cables often need a fair old "yank" to move them.

4/ Grommets are there to a/ seal the bulkhead, and b/ stop cables etc fraying where they pass through metal walls. They don't cost much, so why not fit them in properly? Whatever you do, ensure that no cables or wires can chafe where they pass through bulkheads etc.

5/ Sorry - can't help with a London chrome plater - hope someone else comes up trumps for you.

HTH

Wilf

RE: 3
If you mount the cholke cable under the dash make sure that the edges are radiused or the SVA people will "knock" it.(discovered this recently myself.I did think that the underside of the dash on the drivers side was exempt...but the SVA knocked me on it,and not wanting to tell them their job(and unsure if the rules had changed) i quickly unbolted it ant tucked it out of the way).
if you decide to mount it on the dash, mount it behind the steering wheel....This area is exempt from the "dangerous projections" rule at the SVA.
Good luck.

Hi there just to add to what Wilf said about the vac, hose make sure you fit a non return valve in it to ensure that you don't get any fuel to your servo these are available from most main dealers i.e.Ford
cheers

RE: Holley Carb Attachments .

You need to use at least the bung that fits into the Servo and the non return valve with the arrow in the right direction. Use grommets everywhere you go through the chassis or body if you want to pass the SVA. Yes use slit convoluted tube over your loom it looks nice and is practical and dont forget the P clips to suit. another point is fit the loom before the engine its much easier. For the accelorator cable I turned up an end from brass slit with a hack saw so that it would fit over the ball and then glued it in place with plastic metal. or yu could use a sierra cable i think they work oK with holly carbs.Buy your elecrtical bits from Vehicle Wiring Products mail order 0115 9305454 you may find them cheaper.
