Which differential?

HI EVERYONE

I HAVE A SUMO III WITH A ROVER V8. THE PROBLEM IS THE DIFF RATIO IS FAR TOO HIGH, 3.92:1 I THINK, AND IT REVS LIKE A LOONY, MAKING FIRST GEAR UNNECESSARY. THE DIFF IS FROM A 2.0 SIERRA.

COULD I DO A STRAIGHT SWAP FOR ANOTHER DIFF WITH A LOWER RATIO, POSSIBLY A LSD, OR WOULD I HAVE TO CHANGE DRIVE SHAFTS ETC? ALSO, WHERE COULD I GET ONE? I LIVE IN N.WALES NEAR CHESTER.

CAN ANYONE HELP? :'(

RE: Which differential?

Yes you can swap for a 2liter one 3.63 to one and almost any Sierra diff will fit the Pilgrim mount. I m not sure about the Sierra cosworth one though If you go for the LSD from a Scorpio 4x4 or Sierra 4x4 you will have to change the drive shafts and brakes and hand brake cable. Its the same ratio 3.63. Im not sure it woth the work though. I have a LSD set up in my garage that I may use one day if I get really bored and fancy getting dirty again. The LSD could come in handy but the brakes wont add much to the car stopping performance as the drums are more than adequate for the weight of the car. The sierra and Scorpio were only fitted with disk brakes for ABS reasons and on late models because they look better through big spoke ally wheels. If you are running that diff and the front brakes came from the same donor then they are possibly not the big double vented jobs that were fitted to the 2L I would spend my money on sorting them and just buy a 2L diff from a breakers, they are almost unbustable, just replace the oil seals they are dirt cheap to buy anyway. You shouldnt have to pay very much for the diff no more than forty quid and thats if he removes it for you. It really a matter of you pay ypur money and take your choice and they they are dead easy to change on a Sumo so if you are unlucky and get a duff is not a big problem. The diff and drive shafts are the only parts on my car that were not completly refurbished and so far no problems

RE: Which differential?

Funny you should ask about a limited slip diff. We've got one for sale now. It'll straight replace the Sierra one and you can use your current shafts. I have no idea about ratios -sorry. Its from a XR4x4 and is in as new condition.

RE: Which differential?

Mr Jones
I have a rover engine but with jag rear end the ratio is 3.31/1,which I believe gives the best all round performance.Mine accelerates well enough to scare my girlfriend and she wont let me try it above the 130mph I've had it to.
