Borg Warner T5

Hi All,
Its been too long since I posted anything, although I frequently visit to keep abreast of developments.

In order to keep "her indoors" happy,(prior to my build) I am currently reconstructing the drive at home, block paving etc (you get the idea!). I was cursing all you lucky devils that managed to get to Detling whilst I slaved away.

I have an opportunity to get a very reasonably priced Borg Warner T5Hi All,
Its been too long since I posted anything, although I frequently visit to keep abreast of developments.

In order to keep "her indoors" happy,(prior to my build) I am currently reconstructing the drive at home, block paving etc (you get the idea!). I was cursing all you lucky devils that managed to get to Detling whilst I slaved away.:'( :'( Its costing a fortune and I am so depressed thinking about the money that could be better spent on my Cobra build !! x( x(

I have an opportunity to get a very reasonably priced Borg Warner T5 (I understand that it came out of a Ford Cosworth)which I will fit to either a Windsor (I have a short block) or a Cleveland Boss with Aussie quench heads (which I also have an option on).

Question: Has anyone else got this type of set up? How is the T5 from a reliability/strength point of view? Any idea of the ratios? Would it suit a Jag Diff with 3.31 output? (which is on order and due in 4 weeks)

I am still researching and still have not placed my order for a chassis (Crendon), but am rapidly aquiring other components for the build.

All responses gratefully received}>

RE: Borg Warner T5

Hi David.
I've used loads of T5's and more recently the Sierra Cosworth ones as the Chevy T5's are no longer available, however they are only rated to about 320 ft lb torque which is fine for a std Goodwrench (Chevy 350)engine which has around 250 bhp and 320 ft lb of torque but if you are thinking of putting it to an engine with more power that this you could be running it on borrowed time.

Just as a guide, i pay from £60 for a box that needs reconditioning to around £300 for a good one.

Be very careful when it comes to ‘very reasonably priced Borg Warner T5’ as there is normally a reason for the price, some have been knocking around a while and been driven very hard.

Top Boss in Derby are getting in, and fitting, a load of T56 boxes. They cost a lot more but give you 6 gears

RE: Borg Warner T5

I know a lot of folks have used T5's in Cobra's, but also a lot have broken them. Personally I wouldn't use one, especially behind a Cleveland (torque monster if built right). Go top loader or tremec, and then probably TKO for peace of mind. Again, lots of folk will say the std tremec 3550 is Ok up to 350 lbs ft, anything over that, TKO.
And if anyone says "it's only a light car, the rear wheels will break away before the 'box goes", ponder this - you are unlikely to get rear wheel spin in third and fourth, yet the engine can still deliver peak torque, and the 'box will see it.

Just my 2p's

RE: Borg Warner T5

Try Glebe transmissions, Last time I spoke to them for a shifter for my Camaro T5 box they said they had buckets of spares for GM boxes as they rebuild them for TVR (GM T5) racers. They are in Stoke on Trent and no. is 01782 594101 and the helpful chap was nick cresswell.

Also if identifying a used box then the serial no. can be checked against a website callle www.gearzone.net it will tell you about whether it is world class gearset etc. Only get a T5 WC as a minimum. And main fault I have been tols is the breakage of selector rods SO take it easy and I have been told NOT to power shift. Cozzy box may require some mods depending on clutch/splines/prop and bellhpusing used.
