Exhaust sealant

Just arrived home from the Gardner Douglas factory, having purchased my exhaust system including a beautiful pair of headers (what workmanship). Andy Burrows suggested that each joint in the system including the headers to head joint, need to be sealed with black silicon bathroom sealant as purchased from DIY shops. Well a trip to Wicks was unfruitful; every colour except black was available?

So chaps, where do you get black silicon sealant. Or what have the rest of you GD builders used to seal the exhaust system together.

Whilst at Wicks I bought some clear silicon with a view to using that. Has anyone used clear or is there some mystical properties in the black variety Andy suggested.

Any inspiration would be gratefully received.

Dave

As far as I am aware black silicon does,nt have any mystical properties the only advantage I can think of is that it,s much easier to see how much you are using and get a nice even coat

I can tell you that it makes an excellent exhaust sealer in any colour but should,nt be used any where near a catalytic converter but I doubt that,s an issue with your installation

RE: Exhaust sealant

Can anyone clarify:

If you use silicone sealer on the headers to head joint I presume this is either side of a normal header gasket and does not replace the gasket totally?

Thanks

RE: Exhaust sealant

That's great to hear pete. I've just finished making my headers myself. I've not tightened them up yet but it looks like a trip to "B&Q" for me today at some time.

RE: Exhaust sealant

Pete - whats the reason for not using silicon near a cat? Does it poison them?

RE: Exhaust sealant

No, it sticks to their fur, then you have to put them in the washing machine to clean them. :7

RE: Exhaust sealant

Wilf

All I can tell you is that on replacement cats there is always a warning not to use silicon as a sealant on any joints before the converter. I can only assume that if silicon gets inside it has some adverse effect. It will also void the warranty

But guess what, cat friendly sealer is available at an extortionate price

Believe what you will
