Pilgrim Sumo - Wiring - Starter motor connections

Doh! I thought I would get further than a day before having to come back asking for adivse from you guys...

Ok - Pilgrim Sumo - Wiring - Starter connectors...

I have a refurbished starter that comprises of a stud connector and 2 spade connectors. There is also a second stud connector but this has a woven wire 1" in length to the starter...

I will be connecting the Battery to the Stud - As well as a power cable for my mega power base amp that will turn my car in to a portable disco if required - but enough of that for now... I have a red/white cable from the loom (One of those lose ones) which needs to be connected to one of the spade connectors. (I don't need to connect any other cables as I have a 12V coil and no Ballast resistor)

My questions are :

Which spade connector does the Red/White cable connect (Top/Bottom) ?

How is the starter earthed - do I need to add a second earth connector to the other Spade?

PS : Still no distributor fitting kit - but hopefully by the end of the week!

RE: Pilgrim Sumo - Wiring - Starter motor connections

Hi Guys -

Would just like to report that 'We have partial lift off!'

"At 11:34 on the Eve of Thursday 7th March, The Car known as 'That Damn Car in The Garage' made it's first attempt to breath with the artificial aid of an electric starter. The proud builder was witnessed by neighbours running up and down the street yelling 'EURREEKKAAAA!'"

One giant leap for Dan, One small step for mankind

RE: Pilgrim Sumo - Wiring - Starter motor connections

HI Dan,

Well done.

RE Starter connections.

These can vary slightly depending upon the solenoid fitted. The starter moter itself is earthed through its case, the solenoid is the tricky bit. Some have an extra terminal to supply 12v to the coil during starting, some dont.

If you have an electircal test meter you can look to see which of the smaller terminals has a small resistance to earth (Case/chassis), this would be the coil in the solenoid.

If you cant find one then try between the two small terminals. If you have a resistance here, you need to earth down one of them.... Try first with a fly lead from the battery rather than risk your loom, just tap the solenoid +ve connector and the starter should run, if not check again.

I hope this helps. :7
