Lucas Distributor Problem

I have finally received the parts I ordered from Luminetion so have been busy spending the day reading wiring diagrams and figuring out how it all fits in to the Sumo Loom. I have however (as normal) hit apon a problem. The distributor I have aquired for my engine is Electronic. The Ingition kit requires that an optical sensor replaces the current sensor. Which appears to be mechanical. This is fair enough - I removed the distributor cap to find a clear plastic cap with the word 'DO NOT REMOVE' now this has thrown my plans - I know I need to replace the sensor for it to work with the power module I have - but am some what put of by this message.

On another note, The Pilgrim wire loom has a feed to the distributor and another to the coil. The one to the coil I will keep but I'm just wanting to check; I am planning on looping the distributor connection as I should connect the power module direct to the distributor. (The power module also controls the power flow to the 12v coil - I guess by controling the negative feed)

Does any one have any experience of these 'Constant Energy' ignition systems and how they fit to the electronic distributor and the Sumo loom.

RE: Lucas Distributor Problem

I'd be very cautious of fitting the lumenition kit to the power module of the Lucas coil. The power module receives its' signal from the reluctor pickup in the dissy, the Lumenition is an optical switch which is quite different. Get the power module from lumenition and a high energy coil, don't bother about fancy coils just go for a HE coil with a primary resistance of about 0.8ohms about £25. The lumenition optical switch is a 3 leg device power earth and signal. The signal goes to the "power pack" which then provides a high speed switch to the coil negative. The rev counter takes its' signal from this negative coil connection.

Ignore the message on the splash plate, it's there to protect the electronics from ingress of crap. Have you got the correct fitting kit as the lumenition kit is different for the 35de8 and the 35DLM8, this is imperative, don't modify the kit unless your'e very confident as you need to phase the signal to the rotor arm position. Make sure you've got a good set of internal circlip pliers to remove the circlip in the dissy shaft.

RE: Lucas Distributor Problem

Thanks for the input Kev, I will need to get a set of circlip pliers. are they fixed for the size of the circlip or can you get interchangable 'prongs' for the pliers.

The Coil is power matched to the lumenition power module. the only Lucas part is the dissy (35DLM - the fitting kit is FK.110 - I ordered both parts from Rimmer bros at the same time as the lumenition kit so I'm hoping they have been matched for me...

RE: Lucas Distributor Problem

My circlip pliers have interchangeable prongs, quality is a bit dubious but they do work.

If the rotating arm in your dissy has what looks like a dark grey 8 pointed star then it's the reluctor pickup and I suspect that the FK110 is the fitting kit for the points dissy, I can't remeber exactly but the kit I had sounded like the FK110 and my dissy is the electronic type and they didn't match. Suggest you phone Rimmers and check.

RE: Lucas Distributor Problem

I can't do much until I get the pliers so I'll give them a ring tomorrow and double check before I open the fitting kit

RE: Lucas Distributor Problem

Spoke to Rimmers today and was told that the kit I needed was the FK114 - Not the FK110 , Time to sit back and wait until the correct part turns up.

RE: Lucas Distributor Problem

You'll be pleased to know that when you do get the kit it is a fairly straightforward fitting operation and it's much more reliable than the Lucas setup. When you setup the dissy for TDC to get it running, the engine fires on the trailing edge of the light breaker, this is not mentioned in the docs.

Good luck
