Exhaust Manifolds

Hi Fellow Cobra builders

Having managed to remove and drill out and re-tap the broken exhaust manifold studs on my Ford V6 in my Sumo I need to replace them with something – options seem to be

1. New studs from Ford (same problem later?)
2. Mild steel bolts (same problem later too?)
3. High tensile allen bolts (go rusty still?)
4. Stainless steel bolts or allen bolts (maybe high tensile stainless?)
5. Something I haven’t thought of?

the stainless option also could cause problems should one shear off - very hard to drill out

What did you use? (And why?)

Pete

RE: Exhaust Manifolds

Exhaust manifolds always a bit*h after a while of use. My only tip, because I am not overly familiar with your engine, would be to use plenty of copperslip (sp?) on everything. Last time I played with studs on an exhaust manifold was on a Fiat X1/9 - used mild steel studs with brass nuts.

Had stainless bolts on my old Rover - no problems there, but obviously into an ally head. Current engine uses high tensile steel socket headed thingies - again with ally heads, and again I used plenty of copperslip. I don't want to think about getting those things out ever again - they were a sod to get in.

HTH

RE: Exhaust Manifolds

I've today removed a manifold from my Rover engine, it came off no real problem and the bolts, yes bolts, removed without a hitch, but they are ARP stainless steel bolts from Real Steel, no copper slip used when I fitted them. I suggest use stainless if you can get them.

regards
Kev
