RE: Kent 214 Cam

Don't want to be pedantic wilf but am going to be anyway:-

the key does not give 'mechanical connection' between the cam and timing gear. Drive is transmitted by friction between the clamping faces of the cam and gear under the clamping force provided by the cam gear bolt. The key only gives you timing relationship gear to cam while you torque the bolt up.

If the bolt's not torqued sufficiently, and drive IS carried by the key, just see how long the key/cam/gear last before they fret themselves into oblivion ! ! !

I've ordered one from rimmers, but I think I will also try extracting then original one (looked like it was welded in place though thats why I ordered one).
Perhaps I'll now have two!
Never mind, someday I may learn to not panic and just swear alot instead

RE: Kent 214 Cam

Aah - pedantry eh?? Well I can do that too. If you look at what I wrote, it does not conflict with your own statement. I said "provides a mechanical connection between shaft and gear". Well it does, it ensures correct timing of the gear relative to the shaft - how could it do that if there was no mechanical connection? (a sliding fit to be sure, but still a connection).
I didn't actually say it provided the drive between gear and shaft, so there, yah boo sucks.

Anyway, least I identified the part right - I would never have lived it down if I had got it wrong!!!!!!!!!

Wilf :P

RE: NOW turned into Kent 214 Cam PROBLEM!

ok, I've been to the garage had a look at what Ive got and oh Boll*X it doesnt quite look right!.
Let me explain,
my new cam at the end where the timing gears slide on has no 'lump' (for lack of a better word)to catch the gears. It has a groove in the place where the 'lump' should be.
I've attached a picture (from RPI) web site of the 'lump' circled in yellow of which I dont have!!.
Help! have I been ripped off and sold a dud or what?.
