MCI Starter Motor

I have a new MCI Starter motor fitted to my Chevy, in the 6 months of the build the starter motor has never failed to start the engine, but I have never run the engine for more than a few minutes. Now I have the car fitted with exhausts, I have run the car up and down my drive and got the engine up to normal running temperature.

I switched of the engine and stood back to admire my handywork, got back in the car, nothing but a click on the starter, took the dash of to check wiring, everything ok, checked the wires to the starter, ok, went for lunch and a think.

Got back to the car about 2 hours later, pushed the button and it started first time, left it running again, stopped after about 10 mins, push button, nothing.

I have heard about problems with starter motors overheating when headers are close to them, but my headers and intermediate pipes are nowhere near the starter and the starter feels cool to the touch when the problem arises.

Any ideas folks?

Mike

RE: MCI Starter Motor

If your battery is in good condition then suspect your earth. its worth getting a good earthing strap and claming it to a member near the earth point to te battery anf fixing it to one of the bolts that locate the starter. This was the problem with mine.
Best of luck.
Mike.

Mikey

The battery is new and there is no problems with earthing.

It starts everytime when the engine is cold.

RE: MCI Starter Motor

Miket - the problem is that a perfectly good earth when cold can become nbg when hot.
Either your starter is getting to hot or a termination somewhere is going high resistance when it gets hot. OR - the solenoid is suspect.

RE: MCI Starter Motor

Wilf

I put a good earth on the starter directly to the chassis, no difference.

I then decided to put a new 16 amp trigger cable from the solenoid to the starter button, bingo starts ever time even when hot, just out of curiosity I reconnected the original cable, it started once and then gave up, put back the 16 amp cable and it has worked every push of the button.

I'm bu**ered if I know what the problem was with the original cable in the new loom, perhaps to much load on it.

Any thoughts Wilf or anywhon.

Mike
