Chassis Number

This is probably a stupid question, but.....Where do you get chassis numbers from? I have a Pilgrim Sumo chassis and was wondering whether it was the SVA Inspector who issued it or do you have to get one (where from?) before the SVA test?
Anybody?

RE: Chassis Number

Most people with a Sumo just think up a number that is 17 digits long and stamp it on usually using a combination of birthdays and initials. It's a bit crude i know but it's the truth.

RE: Chassis Number

You can either make your own up (as suggested) or you can ask your local vehicle registry Office to allocate one. They have blocks of "off-the-shelf" VINs to allocate to re-shelled vehicles etc. This latter course of action is not that appealing because if ever the local constabulary are looking for "bent" motors, they tend to start searching their computers for ones with VRO VINs. Although you're doing everything by the book and may well have nothing to hide, you could still get more attention from "plod" than you'd like.

If you do your own VIN, any string of 8 or more characters (up to 17) is likely to suffice.

RE: Chassis Number

Pilgrim told me to make up my own starting PS99 (pilgrim sumo 1999 registered) followed by six digit DOB. However, according to the DVLA office I registered at in Chester, the number you pick needs to be on the sales receipt for the chassis and stamped by pilgrim. They overlooked mine because they couldnt be bothered to re-do the paperwork to issue me their number once they realised where I'd got mine from. From what I've heard licencing offices seem to all have different ways of doing things though. Hope this helps.

RE: Chassis Number

I read this post with interest as I shall be (hopefully) registering my CR Viper at the Chester office. If its possible, I wouldn't mind some advice on sorting out the paperwork for registration and SVA.....I work in Sandycroft and live just up the way in Saughall. If you have time, could you give me a call on 01244-880914. Thanks.

RE: Chassis Number

Just make it up - but don't TELL them thats what you've done - believe me, it's the simplest way.
