RE: Clutch Plate Alignment

Hi Charlie

If you don't have access to a clutch alignment tool, a quick fix is to use a 3/8 drive extension and a roll of insulation tape

Simply wrap tape around the end of the extansion till it fits nicely in the spigot bearing, repeat operation in the appropriate place along the bar to fit the clutch plate centre, then, voila you have a homemade alignment tool

Just one final point, it's worth checking that the clutch plate will actually fit on the first motion shaft of the gearbox prior to assenbly, I'm quite suprised you could'nt get it near enough by eye

Hope this helps

Pete

Any good you can borrow it.

RE: Clutch Plate Alignment

I was not clever enough to think of the ideas suggested here and also never had a clutch aligning tool.

Take a look here (http://homepage.ntlworld.com/tony.br...y02.html#may04) to read how I managed to get this done. It does work.

Regards,
Tony B

RE: Clutch Plate Alignment

On this subject, some time ago users were talking of 'dialling in' a bell housing to a block, why is this? what do you have to do? and if I have a baulk standard GM ally bell to a Baulk standard chevy sbc (all be it from separate vehicles but the design meant that chevy did use this in there corvettes) then why?

I have no idea!! but your logic seems right, at least that's what I've done with my assembly..Guess it's one of those "techie" things, and until you hear different, forget it and fit the standard units.

RE: Clutch Plate Alignment

The bellhousing need aligning correctly to the block. You need a dial gauge and the dowels.

Offer the bellhousing up, use the dial gauge to determine how far out of center you are, then knock it in to line it up. Use the dial gauge again, and again, and again.

Takes a bloody age!!!
