Spark Plugs

I have a 1973 355 Chevy which has just been rebuilt, with an MSD 6AL Ignition.

I was wondering which is the best spark plug to use, I have got Champion RV12YC in at the moment. The reason I ask is that I have just broken one taking it out to open up the gap because of the MSD unit as they recommend a 0.050"-0.060" gap and I have spent 2 hours running about this afternoon and nobody stocks them or the equivalent NGK BPR 5FS

Cheers

Mike

RE: Spark Plugs

Speak to Declan or John at real steel and tell them the C/R of your engine and the H.P you are getting along with the ignition system you are using. I have always found these guys knowledgable and helpfull.

RE: Spark Plugs

Mike - if you are desperate I have some "old" (must have at least 3000 miles on them) spares - could stick one in the post if you need it. I assume you meant to type RC12YC?

RE: Spark Plugs

Wilf

No I'm not desperate, I managed to beg a second hand NGK equivalent.

This is why I posted the question, you assumed I meant RC12YC. I have got the broken plug in front of me and it says RV12YC.

Thanks to David for the reply but I could'nt find this plug listed in the Real Steel catalogue.

Thanks Wilf for the offer, but more help would be appreciated.

Mike

RE: Spark Plugs

Mike - in that case, I second Davids comments about talking with Real Steel - just give tham a call. I can't remember offhand the spark plug classification codes, are yours taper seat seal rather than gasket?

RE: Spark Plugs

Cheers again Wilf

Yes they are taper seat seal, I have today spoken with my engine builder and he has confirmed that the plugs fitted are correct for my engine and he is supplying me with replacements + 1.

RE: Spark Plugs

Picking the right plugs is often trial and error. Run with the plugs you have got and check yhe colour after some use. If the engine is running at the right mixture and the plugs are towards black, go up to a hotter plu. If the plugs are lighter than a tan colour and the mixture is O.K. go to a colder plug.
Mike.

RE: Spark Plugs

Funny that - I actually pulled all my plugs last night to check them out (you know how plugs can wear out after 1500 miles, talk about an over-maintained engine!). All of them were a nice light tan colour, mmmm, lovely.

RE: Spark Plugs

Only problem with checking plugs at regular intervals is that you need a good supply of plasters. unless your are more accessable than mine.

Thanks again

RE: Spark Plugs

Mike - it is a Ford - I just whistle and they pop out by themselves!

Mind you - I had to turn down a plug socket - there's bugger all room in those edlebrock heads.
