RE: Bonnet Clearance - DAX SB Chevy Edelbrock Performer RPM

Hi there
I think Mr Gasket do a 'low riser' air filter thats as small as you can get without compromising air flow. Real Steel/europa are the best bets as usual. Other 2 possibilities if clearance is just a few mm is to oval out you engine mounts assuming the sump has a good clearance or as I did in the early days when I had SU's, hollow out the inner skin of the bonnet itself. I suspect the change in air filter will do it though.

Cheers

Richard

Yeah I got the same problem, so I used a 2.5 " filter (instead of 3" recommended) and solved it. Though the top of air cleaner is very close to primary area and may limit air flow slightly and I would have to shorten one of the vertical return pipes (think they are over flow pipes in case of a flood etc)

These lower paper filters were easily available for under a tenner.

I tried the low riser (2") and totally fouled my carb so I have it as spare if any one wants it. You can buy a spacer from real steel though and space it up. Its a case of mucking around with various combinations. You could lower the engine and get a 7.5 " kicked out sump but is expensive way of doing it.

Kev

Have a look at the top and bottom of the air filter, and look at the depth of the join on the rubber to the element.

You might have enough room lower the profile of the air filter by cutting away the surplus rubber on the top and bottom of the filer element. After you have cut this away if possible, lay some cling film on the filter housing, then put some mastic around it and place the filter on top of the mastic. This will form an air tight seal between the modified bottom and top of the filter and the filter housing.

This is obviously dependant on how much you can cut away.

RE: Bonnet Clearance - DAX SB Chevy Edelbrock Performer RPM

Kev, two comments

I have similar underhood clearance probs. I have fitted the Mr Gasket low riser over my Holley 600 and it fits fine - you just need to remove the choke flaps that you don't need anyway.

I also have in my garage a Holley Contender inlet manifold in good condition and hwich is a fair bit lower than the Edelbrock Performer RPM - which is quite high. Let me know if you are interested and I can bring it over to Duxford - it is for sale.

Regards
