400 ci Ford Info

Iv'e been offered a 400ci Ford to play with, it's still in a Lincoln Continental of 1978 vintage and seems to run quite sweetly.

Now there's got to be someone out there who likes Ford's so can anyone give me any info on this engine or where I should go and look for such info.

The chap want's £1K for engine, auto box, propshaft and radiator, does this sound about right or am I being done......I know I should be.

Just hope Jud don't start chucking bombs around or petrol will be £10 a gallon

The only exactly 400ci engine Ford made was the 400M. If it is one of those, walk away, because there are VERY few tuning parts available, they were a low power output engine, and also the bellhousing bolt pattern is the same as the 429/460 engine family, and severely limits the gearbox choice (basically toploader or C6 auto only).
If however, it is actually a 390 or 406, then it is an FE engine, of more interest.

Can you get a block casting number?

Ok thank's for that Wilf, the engine had "400" on the radiator cowl and the guy did a cross reference against the VIN number which showed it to be a 400 so you've probably saved me £1K and a hernia.

I did go searching the forum a found a string from some months ago from a chap who was most upset that he had been sold a 400 after thinking it to be a 351 so I was getting a little nervous.
