RE: Rover v8 EFi or Carb ?

"What choice do I have with an EFI manifold?"

Wilf,

Do come out from the dark ages. You have exactly the same choice with Efi as you do with Holley/Edelbrock Carb. It's called Holley Pro-jection - it even still looks like a 4 barrel carb just to keep you happy. :P :P

RE: Rover v8 EFi or Carb ?

I spent good money on one of those carbs for my RV8. Yes... in the pocket I went. It ran straight out of the box. Once I'd set the timing right from it's initial setting of 180 degrees out.

Yes I admit it, I can be a dipstick at times. But it's nearer to 700 quid once you've added the dreaded VAT. They don't tell you that it doesn't include VAT. Or postage which is another 20 quid or so (memory fading)

I think that the EFI system would have been a better bet. But the pancake does look good when you open the bonnet.

Is that an answer to your question. Guess not, but it's my two pence worth. Make of it what you will.

RE: Rover v8 EFi or Carb ?

Russ - nice try, 'cept that the Holley Projection system is a pile of ####.

Now - if you go with the std Rover EFI - what choice do you have for the manifold???

Methinks bugger all.

Wilf

PS - and exactly what sits on top of your own much interfered-with RV8???

PPS - I like the dark ages - in the dim light you can't see exactly what you are doing and so have to work by touch - much more fun. }>

Wilfy,

Quoting myself from above:

"Personal view is that a Cob should have a Carb (or two but preferably four) and who cares about economy anyway."

and thats exactly what I've got. (and awaiting delivery of 4 x 48mm Dellortos ) (not exactly £500 though x(

RE: Rover v8 EFi or Carb ?

yeah well, nobody said I had to read things properly here anyway.

Have seen folks in the US talk about special cams for 4x2V carbs, 'specially Webers on 289's. In fact they go for custom grinds. Any idea why?

RE: Rover v8 EFi or Carb ?

Nope.

Only thing I can think of is that most US cams will be designed for single or dual 4bbls on top of a single or dual plane manifold. Certainly a quad carb set-up is likely to have shorter secondary inlet tract lengths (length after the carbs) and probably longer (and adjustable) primary lengths by way of the trumpets.

Obviously any cam can be designed to get the best from any set-up, and also tailored to suit the power/torque balanced an individual might want.

Having said that, I dunno really, just a semi-educated guess.

RE: Rover v8 EFi or Carb ?

Lot of lively banter here and some good info; but make sure before you hand over your cash that the engine number on the block dates pre August 92 otherwise you could find yourself having to fit cats to pass the SVA. Lots of Rover exchange blocks now use the later Land Rover blocks which are stiffer; but don't get lumbered with a late block. Use the Engine number list for Rovers on this web site and check it out.

RE: Rover v8 EFi or Carb ?

Hi pal, if you are still having grief with email (but ok with the internet), then use a web based email solution (like hotmail etc). Yep, I am off to Donington to get the rest of my bits to get started on the build. Great pictures of your engine !!! It sure looks as though things are coming along ! The pics I took at AK came out fine, so I can see where the lines go etc so hopefully it shouldnt be too bad.

Anyway, take care mate.

RE: Rover v8 EFi or Carb ?

Seems to me that its all about looks at the end of the day. I bet there is no performance advantage over a GOOD carb compared to a standard injection system. If you want to waste £500 - £1000 on making it look the same as every other cobra, then thats fine. Personally I'd rather have something a bit different....
