Put a power source to the sender and a guage, and stick it in a pan with a cooking thermometer. If memeory serves me correctly, if you don't put a voltage stabiliser on it, it will read slightly off.

agree with the practice discribed.
but does it not depend on what type of gauge you have as to whether
you need a voltage stabiliser?
if you have a smiths gauge you probably would ?

When I needed to check my water temp. guage & sender, I sent them to Speedy Cables. The turn around was very quick & charge small. This saved farting about with boiling water & the misses moaning about her best saucepans getting grubby!!!!

RE: water temp sender

Basically your temp sender is a resistor that changes resistance with heat. As it gets warmer its resistance decreases. So when its at room temperature it should read around 1000 - 5000 ohms, depending on what sort it is. When you plonk it into boiling water it should read around 100 - 500 ohms. As long as it decreases with heat, its unlikely to be faulty.
