Replacement Windscreens for Pilgrim Sumo

After lengthy discussion with just about everybody in the UK who makes/supplies cobra windscreen assemblies I have found out I appear to have a "rogue" screen of no identifiable manufacturer (Autobrass/Brasscraft/Pilgrim...) - the screen looks OK but in order to make it fit the builder of the car (I’ve bought it part finished - foolish boy !!!!!)has put a glass fibre & filler "fillet" under either end on the scuttle to fill a 25mm gap, this gap has come about due to the bottom screen rail not actually retaining the glass thus making the ends of the screen sit too high - enough of all that babble...

My question is who's screen assy's have proven to be the best allrounders (price/fit/quality etc) for fitment to a MKII Sumo's

PS - I plan to replace the whole lot as I’ve even manage to crack the glass now putting the "rogue" back in :+

RE: Replacement Windscreens for Pilgrim Sumo

I've been told that Brasscraft are one of the best for the Sumo. That is where I intend to get mine from (hopefully within the next two weeks).

RE: Windscreens for Pilgrim Sumo

Big caution.
Last I knew Pilgrim screens are not SVA compliant.
Pilgrim provide some lead flashing to meld over the edge to comply.
This is no longer acceptable for the SVA!

I used Brasscraft for my Sumo -Great quality & service.
I looked at AutoBrass and the quality etc looked very similar to Brasscraft.

There was some interference between the screen pillar and the door hinge.
My doors & body were fitted so I trimmed the screen 1/4"
If the hinge is not yet fitted you could trim that.

I was aware that the Pilgrim windscreen needed some 'help' to go though SVA but I was'nt aware that that had changed. Looks like a brasscraft one for me then, do you have weather equipment fitted and does using the brasscraft screen have any implications for fitting a hood or anything else?

RE: Windscreens for Pilgrim Sumo

I bought an Auto brass screen which is pretty similar to a Brasscraft screen and the Pilgrim Hood Frame didn't fit to well, so I bought a set of Autobrass hood frames which did fit but then not perfectly. I have to say the Pilgrim one are a better quality and paint finish but the curve was slightly diffent and I didn't want to risk screen damage. Apart from that it all fitted well.I actually bought all my bright work from Autobrass, it was more expensive than Pilgrim but all SVA compliant and I thought better quality . There is no competition with the screen the Autobrass one looks much better and the screen is screwed into the side frames not Glued as the Pilgrim one is. Have said all that Pilgrim still offer excent value. You pays yout money and take your choise.

RE: Windscreens for Pilgrim Sumo

As far as I know, Brasscraft/Autobrass screens are pretty much the same.
If you have a large gap at the ends of the screen, I would first look to the angle at which the screen is set - this can have a big effect on how the screen fits the contours of the scuttle area. There is always a gap at the extremities - on my car it is down to around 5mm.
I do not personally know the origins of a "Pilgrim" screen, but my money would be on one of the two aforementioned manufacturers.

I got the Pilgrim Double duck hood, Brasscraft bows
All is great.
I ditched the Pilgrim supplied lift a dot fasteners as they are too big for my taste.
I purchased some smaller sized ones [can't remember the name]
Works a treat

RE: Windscreens for Pilgrim Sumo

Chris at Brasscraft absolutely denies any supply of parts to Pilgrim, although he has suggested mods to them to help with the screen fit. I can vouch for the quality - picked my screen up last week, along with the stainless nudge bars (nicely rounded to fit the body shape)

RE: Windscreens for Pilgrim Sumo

Pete,

When I collected my Brasscraft screen from Chris a few months ago now he was telling me that he was in talks with Pilgrim to Re-supply them, as Pilgrims current source wasn't SVA compliant. May well be the case now.

Also one other point - The brasscraft screens comes with longer legs than the Pilgrim supplied one. This is because The Sumo Hinge box for the doors get in the way so if you go for a Brasscraft screen you either have to Lob of the legs or alter the hinges on the door to allow the legs through. The advantage of the latter is that the Screen has a better anchoridge to the chassis.

As far as windscreens go - The brasscraft screen is well put together and compliant with SVA. I got my screen with a blue tint across the top - looks lovely on the car
