fitting lucas switches

A minor problem, but irritating none the less...I'm trying to fit my Lucas switches to my leather covered dash but can't get the bl**dy things in!
The instruments and warning lights went in ok as they were pushed through from the front, but the switches come through from the back and push the covering back throught the hole. Any ideas?
Oh and another thing, why is there so little thread on the flaming things?

Oh, I'm so angry I could throw the phone down.....x(

RE: fitting lucas switches

Hi Simon,

Sounds obvious, but you are going to have to remove sufficient leather and backing foam, so that the switch clears (presumably you are referring to Lucas toggle switches). First use a small modelling knife to roughley remove the excess and make a small hole. Then use a Dremel with a sanding attachment (the tubular type), and very carefully tease it through the dash from the front. This will 'burn' a very clean hole through the leather and backing foam.

The next problem, as you anticipated is that the threads on the switches aren't long enough. It's trusty Dremel time again! Simply grind away a relief at the back of the dash until sufficient thread is showing. Go steady here-the thread does not have to be proud of the dash-just enough to start screwing on the securing collar.

I recommend you do this with the dash removed from the car. It's an easy job, but do a little at a time and check, otherwise you could be swearing into next week!!

RE: fitting lucas switches

No - there is another answer - it's called a cheque book. Not that I recommend it at all of course.

RE: fitting lucas switches

Simon,

A half constructive comment now.

Obviously you are using these switches because they are the prettiest (if you can say that about switches!). BUT they are probably not SVA compliant IMHO.

Are you sure that they will be non contactable where you are installing them.

I know I (and lots of others) have them, but no SVA for needed for me.

RE: fitting lucas switches

Wilf,

Prefer to use my cheque book to buy things I can't do decently myself. (like make wine). (or refine petrol)

RE: fitting lucas switches

Simon,

Easy - rotate the switches as you put them in (without pushing too much) and allow the threaded section to pull itself in to the dash. This will also let the leather get pulled towards the dash (assuming it is tight enough to grip the thread) as it is rotated.
Hope this makes sence - it did to me , but I know what I'm trying to say!!!
Don't forget to do this without wires attached, otherwise, you will have knots behind the dash!!!

RE: fitting lucas switches

Me too, s'why I built my car and had exactly the same problem being discussed here, luckily I had gone for the more "original" looking thinner leather, without foam behind it. Made it easier.
