Cam Timing

Having just reassembled my chevy 350 engine after having it balanced by Real Steel - it will not run correctly. Although it will run it sounds like a bag of sh*t.

Having checked absolutely everything else, I have come to the conclusion I must have not set the cam timing correctly i.e. when lining up the dot on the cam gear with the dot crankshaft gear.

Before I rip the engine apart again, can anyone suggest a way I can check this without removing the sump, harmonic damper, timing cover etc etc and then trying to get it oil tight again!

Thanks

RE: Cam Timing

Before you rip it apart again, if you are using hydraulic tappets, they can sometimes take 20 or 30 minutes to quieten down and open the valves properly.

RE: Cam Timing

Thanks Mark - but I have run it for more than 30 mins and it's still not right. I've fitted new hydraulic lifters (and new push rods and rockers)but it still rattles. Also the exhuast note has changed significantly (louder) and there is a distinct lack of power.

The wrong cam timing is all I can think of to check now - unless anyone has a better idea?

Thanks

RE: Cam Timing

Hi there I'm just in the throws of fitting new cam / heads (engine in car as I like a challenge) and one question came to mind are you using the Cloyes timing set as these have three key ways and I was wondering if you have set up on the right key way ?? the other question is are you using a Comp's cam as these are ground 4 deg off and you should use the OEM key way.
You can check your timing without ripping the engine apart but you will need a degree wheel, a dial indicator and a modified plug (to find TDC)
good luck
Paul
PS I asume your ignition timimg is ok ??
Just another thought when you set your preload on your lifters you did not over cook it as they were empty of oil ???

RE: Cam Timing

Echo all the above, Just finished rebuilding mine, runs great, though the first time problems with float level on the holley made engine run ##### rectified that and was fine, couldn't believe the difference, My hydraulic lifters were quiet after a minute or two only though the ign timing was well out and ran hot but still sounded ok. Re check your cam timing maybe and lifter preloads according to the book, its easy to adjust the wrong ones at wrong time I suppose and get them wrong.

RE: Cam Timing

Hows it going?? with your engine. Mine has only one leak (Mr gasket timing cover) they're rubbish as the oil seal hole is off centre of the crank nose, So I am going to get a genuine GM version and try that. Just something that I picked up on. And no leaks from the chrome lids-yet (tip use thick truck bearing grease - helps seal) cam stop button is a good idea aswell! and a roller cloyes bearing and a .... and a ... and so it goes on! Hey I am working at Buntingford this weekend just down the road?!
