RE: 350 chevy sump

Thanks for all the replies.

After Grahams advice I found a 7 inch canton sump, which will give at least 1 inch better clearence. the low point I beloeve will be the bellhousing, which I can grind off with little trouble

Dave - I always drive at a speed appropriate for the road and the conditions - some may have a different perception of appropriate speed however}>

Paul - A sump guard sounds a good idea, there are literally hundreds of bumps & ramps where I live, and even after changing the sump, I have no doubt that I'll end up with a hole in the next one too - if possible can you tell me what you made up, how much it cost, and wether you're willing to do another - oh and I still gotta speak to you about the roll bar mod, which I'll have to get done soon as I want to get on with the painting. re the spacers I have already raised the block with spacers to within 3 mm of the bonnet.

Vince - I have tried almost all approaches to these things, most often I get it right, but sometimes they are just too damn big to negotiate without something touching down - and it always seems to be the sump

Max - I hope it was just the sump that took a hit, my first sump incident was with an aluminium sump, hitting a speed compression and a prominent cats eye just caught the drain plug, which smashed the back off the sump completely, lost all oil, and took the bearings, crank etc with it - fortunately it was a pullout block shoved in for SVA prior to rebuild, but not funny at the time,

RE: 350 chevy sump

Ooh, the sound of that makes my eyes water. Fortunately I only bent the oil pick up as the standard SD1 sump is rather deep - left a huge oil slick in the road & the top end went noisy before I could stop safely. Still all is well now & I was going to change the cam/rockers anyway

Cheers

RE: 350 chevy sump

If you build a sumpguard use Dural Alloy as it is stronger.

Where do you get the Canton sumps from?
Mike.

RE: 350 chevy sump

Hi Steve

Sorry to hear about the sump AGAIN. I'm getting worried about my clearance now, and think I will go with a fabed up guard of some sought. If you need a hand changing the sump, I'm free this week end. I've also bought one of those 1 ton extended reach engine cranes from Machine Mart if you need to borrow it.

RE: 350 chevy sump

Thasokay Vince for you chaps with side pipes and it's worth noting for all you chaps who are in the throws of building that another weak point with ground clearance is the posistion of the headers where they bend under the car.

Mine go under the car more or less between the feet on either side and if you try to negotiate the speed bumps with just two wheels then this is the next point of contact.

In retrospect the best route for the headers would be sort of over the starter motor very close to the bell housing on either side staying as close to the centre line of the car as possible this would then make the two wheel negotiation practicle.

Iv'e put a 6mm sump guard on the car and am starting to get my own back on the speed humps, there's a couple up the road and they are definately getting lower

Regards

Keith
