350 chevy sump

OK! this is becoming a tad tedious,

after 5000 miles I have put a hole in my sump for the SECOND time. fortunately I was only a couple of hundred yards from home so no damage done to the block.

I have a moroso kick out style sump, which provides for improved ground clearence over a standard sump, but does anyone know of a better sump for clearence, without going to the expense of dry sumps? Oh, and I have a stroked block and have been told that some sumps are unsuitable

Do you use sump guards??

I have the suspension & ride height set up properly etc, but unfortunately the proloferation of speed bumps that I must regularly negotiate, although never clouting the sump hard , are clearly abrading to the point of wearing holes on the rear edge of the sump.

Any suggestions on good kit I should look out for

Steve

Hello Mister.
If you already have a Kick out sump, i think your only choice is going to be to fit a sump guard..............Or slow bl**dy down.:7

What about driving over the top of the speed bump with one wheel. works a treat but does slow you down somewhat.

This is what I must do when driving my car. One of my neighbours who has given me a hand with the car was re-paid by getting to drive it. He went straight over the middle of the speed bump (as he would do in his daily driver) and almost gave me a heart attack. "Oops sorry about that" he said, as he almost ripped my sump off.

Steve
You have my sympathies. Some people can be most unkind when its not your fault. I drove over what appeared to be a dead pheasant one evening only to see too late that it was a small wheel with an axle sticking up. It cleanly bisected my sump & there was no way of avoiding it. The ride height on my GD is certainly reasonable ( I'm OK with speed humps) but looking along the underside, the most prominent structure is the sump. I've thought of sump guards myself but never got round to it as yet, perhaps that will be the next winter project.

Keep smiling. Lightning never strikes 3 times (surely)

I have a formed ally plate welded to the bottom of the sump for added protection, as I have also hole my sump previuosly.

What sort of guage ally is that then & have you welded it directly onto the sump or supported it from the chassis?

Cheers

RE: 350 chevy sump

I have a Canto 7.5 " steel sump and modified pickup trapdoors, windage tray etc v.strong (v.good ground clearance but not tested yet) also oil capacity allows 1 quart more than standard sump.

RE: 350 chevy sump

Unfortuantely, I cannot measure it but I think it was about 5mm, and it is welded directly to the sump.

RE: 350 chevy sump

Hi there I have raised my engine on the mounts (20mm)and that works also for one of the other guy's I made a sumpguard that bolts direct to the chassis but you do end up with a catch 22 if you fit a sumpguard then it will be lower than the sump
cheers
Paul

RE: 350 chevy sump

Yeah good one Paul, I also spaced my lump up and using a 2.5" air filter element(not the usual 3"er) V. close to scoop edges but just ok, certainly helps with ground clearances. I suppose some inlet manifolds are higher than others (mine ed/performer) may effect how much you can raise it as well as other issues like side pipes and plumbing to adjust??
