Rover V8 clutch prob.

Good day,

Had a strange problem with my clutch recently. Noticed fluid level was low in master cylinder but wasn't dropping and clutch was fine. Few days later no clutch, looked in cylinder, no fluid, went to a garage and was told I needed a new master cylinder, at the same time they replaced the slave. Car went fine for about a month then I noticed the same bad feeling in the pedal, lo and behold, low fluid level! Topped it up. Haven't driven the car much since then. Where could the fluid be going, no apparent leaks.

Thanks

RE: Rover V8 clutch prob.

I would say that almost certainly it's leaking into the brake servo, I remember having the same problem many years ago on a Rover 2000.
The master cylinder is leaking fluid into the servo can which is why you don't see the leak. x(
If the servo gets full enough you could end up with fluid getting into the engine via the the vacuum hose, it sure makes a lot of smoke. x(
I think it's servo and cylinder off for you my boy. Repair or replace the cylinder and drain out the fluid from the servo.

Hope this helps. :7

Zeb
You dont say what clutch cylinder you have.
Have you checked inside the car for a leak in the rear seal?

Kev
On a Marina brake cylinder there is a small bleed hole behind the seals to stop fliud getting into the servo if the seals go.Make sure its clear when rebuilding it.

RE: Rover V8 clutch prob.

Kev,

If Zeb was talking about his brake fluid level, then I might be inclined to agree with your diagnosis. However, there is no connection between the clutch cylinder and the brake system/servo. Most likely, the fluid is either lying in the bottom of the bell housing and dripping out slowly or it's running down the inside of the bulkhead and lying in the footwell under the carpets. The clutch master does not hold huge amounts of fluid and you might not expect a 'puddle' under the car.

A good spot Russ,
My only excuse is that I did reply first thing and my first caffeine hit hadn't kicked in.
You're probably right about all the missing fluid being under the carpets. x(

RE: Rover V8 clutch prob.

Thanks guys,

Unfortunately I am not able to get at my car at the moment (stuck on a ship in the Caribbean, work, not pleasure) but I am sure there is no fluid leaking back into the footwell. The cylinder is a Rover part. I think the truth will come when I open up the garage in December when I get back and have a look, maybe after standing for 3 months I will get some better evidence.

Thanks again.
