RE: Connections

>>But there is nothing wrong with my present loom

Hi Kelvin,

Sure but you will need some excuse to go to the garage, so why not the wiring. I write software for a living in a little known language of "ANSI C" but part of my job occasionally requires me to design Test Jig Looms. Wiring the car was good therapy. Here is the fuse and relay assembly, it fits up in the passenger footwell and is secured using dzus clips.

RE: Connections

May I recommend buying solder type connectors with seperate insulators.

Most electrical problems are caused by bad connections. Soldering the connectors helps to prevent future problems.

RE: Connections

Hi Kelvin,

The square connectors are Quick Mate sometimes refered to as QM they are basically a bulkhead connector but work also as inline connectors. I use them for in car wiring because of the high pin density and relatively high current carrying capacity of 13A before any derating. Search the RS Catalogue for QM.

With regards to Vince's comments on soldering it has a lot to offer, where the joint is tied down and will not move or vibrate a soldered joint is very weather proof, however such connections as engine sensors etc which are subject to serious vibration are better crimped as crimped joints last longer before they fracture, I don't know why but it is a fact. And if you don't believe me I'll sulk!

Have a nice day

RE: Connections

Yeh the aircraft at work are the worst vibrating thing that i know and they have 95% crimp joints, i'm happy with them as i tend to over heat things

RE: Connections

I'm never flying again.

I simply speak from experience of fixing electrics on cars. Whenever you have a problem with bad connections these are the most common places to look, and usually find.

RE: Connections

Yep vince i do agree but solder joints do dry if not done correctly and some of the looms i work on have been working for 25 years. Imagine ford electrics lasting that long .
