Starter Motor

Is it just me x( or does the Engine Mount on all Sumo / Rover V8 combinations get in the way of removing / fitting the starter motor?

Am I really going to have to lift the engine / remove the mount just to fit my starter?

I've seen loads of previous posts about the tight fit of the Rover V8 in Sumo's, but not seen mention of the starter motor before - I guess it's all part of the same issue.

"Oh bother!", said Pooh.

Regards,
Steve Westcott

RE: Starter Motor

Steve,

It is possible to fit the starter motor with the engine in place. It is a tight fit, but is possible.

I have just recently pulled mine apart (see earlier posts for the saga) and refitted everything. It will be easier without the wiring attached to the end of the solenoid.

Regards,
Tony B

RE: Starter Motor

I fitted my Starter with Engine in place. Has Pilgrim changed the height of the engine Bobbin's they supply?

What would prevent you from removing the starter? Just the engine mounts? How much would the engine have to be lifted and how tall are the bobbin's you have used?

I will attempt to take some photo's this evening (but because the car is outside they may come out underexposed) and post them up tomorrow.

Tony,
How many more days do you rekon it will take for you to put your engine back together ~ need to know how many days I have to get my car SVA'd b4 you :P I've sent off my form for a test date hope it isn't until end of Jan else I may have to cancel it

RE: Starter Motor

I phoned my local station earlier this year (Bristol) and they told me it would only take about a week to get an appointment for SVA. Due to the fact I have no holiday left this year, I won't be going for SVA until the new year, but will be aiming for end on January as my wife has to go into hospital early Jan - that takes priority.

If you have your's on the road before me, you must bring it to my house so I can see it!

RE: Starter Motor

Tony

I run the SD1 RV8 in a Sumo and can get the starter motor out quite easily.

The only real issue is the weight of the damned thing !!

With the wiring disconnected it should be simple case of removing the two bolts and sliding slightly forward.

The only thing I could imagine to be a problem is if you used the left hand engine mount on the right hand side ?

For example, my right hand engine mount angles forwards. This places the bobbins more towards the front of the engine. If your have used them on the wrong sides they could place the bobbins further back and hence the problem with the access to the starter.

Worth a look ?

Hope this helps.

RE: Starter Motor

I have taken a photo of my starter motor install. I don't know if it will provide any insight. I have had to remove the steering linkage to get a clear shot. The tube you see behind the starter is the clutch cable. I have added an extra sleeve for protection. as you can see there is plenty of clearance between the back of the engine mounting and the starter for it's removal (considering that once the 2 bolts on the engine casing have been removed the whole assembly can be dropped down). Before taking this photo I hadn't realised how much dust I had created from rubbing the tub down...

RE: Starter Motor

That will be the newer small sized starter motor - thats why you can get it in/out and Steve can't. The old type (SD1) is almost twice as big (and heavy).

RE: Starter Motor

Thanks for all the info guys.
Looks like it could be one of two things.
I tried the engine mounts all sorts of different ways to get as much clearance as possible. I may have ended up with the left mount on the right side, but the configuration I currently have is the only one that gives suitable clearance all round (and even that means the fan-belt is still a tight squeeze between the pulley and the chassis).
What seems more likely looking at the pictures is that I have one of the larger SD1 starter motor. As it works fine I'm not keen to change it, so I guess I'll just have to squeeze it on somehow. Once it's past the engine mount there will be plenty of room for it.

Cheers,
Steve
