Oil Cooler

Hello

I have recentley been supplied the hardware parts to fit an oil cooler to my Dax. The take off plate has a built in thermostat and then a reducing sleeve that means I have to use a much smaller filter ie Rover type filter.

Is this a problem, will it reduce oil flow in the engine ?

If it is a problem what is the solution, should I use a remote filter system ?

Let me know your thoughts

Cheers

Dave

I had the same....presumably you're using a chevy?

If the cooler & fittings came from Think Automotive (as many do), then a small rover filter fits, but is too small. A much larger filter is one from a pre SDI rover, part GFE145, or TJFB5402 (the same part from different filter makers - the parts stores will have cross references). This will fit the thread & seal, but is almost the same capacity & flow as a chevy one.

ps couldn't find them in hellfords, go to a real car parts place, take your take off & thread with you to make sure, or order from Rimmers or RPI

RE: Oil Cooler

I think Wilf has mentioned it before, but most take off plates seem to have restrictions that may impede the flow of oil. I would suggest that you inspect it closely and if you're not 100% happy, then grind some away. Don't forget to THOROUGHLY clean afterwards though.

RE: Oil Cooler

Yeah I bought one of those from Think Auto motive, after changing from the standard non stat plates which have great flow. but this new one has tiny passages and I am not so confident. However Think Auto say they sell loads and have no problems, just change filter more often.

On the Filter it is a 13/16 unf thread I think. I purchased a big filter (as big as chevy) and it seals. It was one of the Rover 820 injection filters. Not sure about the flow rate, Would it be ok? or shall I go for the early one?

RE: Oil Cooler

Dave - the std filter on nearly all Ford small Blocks is the Motorcraft FL1A, (Coopers Z7 I think). This is the same filter as you find on a RV8, so shouldn't hurt a Chebby.

I would advise you to take a serious look at that takeoff plate with a die grinder tho'. Unless Think Auto have changed them (and they did say they were going to when I brought this up with them a couple of years ago), the internal passages are far too small, imho, for adequate oil flow, especially around the thermostat.

Thanks guys

Got the filter and I am going to check the passages for good flow.

RE: Oil Cooler

Guys I bought the oil cooler take off plate kit and associated parts from Think about 6 months ago for my SB Chevy and have no probs. I still use a standard Chevy filter and can use either long (better but bottom of the filter is low - level with the base of the sump) or shorter type filters. I have remote thermostat fitted into the line near the take off.

RE: Oil Cooler

Nigel
the take off plate for chevy from Think is just that, but for some reason if you get the thermostat plate, the mount for the filter is a smaller diameter, such that a chevy won't fit without leaking from the sealing ring
