Oil for Cam Break in

Hello again

What is the best oil to use to break in a new cam/lifter set. I have been told to use 10-30 non synthetic. I have struggled to find 10/30 is 10/40 OK ??

Cheers

Dave

RE: Oil for Cam Break in

Dave - you should be alright with that. Remember that you will want to change oil and filter immediately after cam break in, to get rid of all that nasty molybdenum paste. Change the oil before it's gotten cold after that cam break in run. Otherwise that stuff settles down onto the bottom of the sump and becomes a big gloopy mass.

What oil do you intend to use for the initial 500 miles (when you want to change it again!)?

Hi Wilf

I have been advised to use 10/40 non synthetic for the first 500 miles then do another filter and oil change.

Wilf
I'll be doing the samein the New Year.
I intend to run Valvoline oil and Cooper filter.
Do I need to use these for the first 500 or will any oil do ie Halfords 10/40 and halfords filter.

RE: Oil for Cam Break in

Steve - my personal preference is to use a "good" oil like Valvoline Racing 20-50 non synthetic at all times. Engine break-in is the time when high friction levels dictate the need for good oil, so putting a "budget" oil in for the first 500 miles could be a false economy.

Oil is too important to an engine to skimp on it. Although I must admit that I wince every time I change mine, since the damm thing takes 2 gallons!! In reality, compared to the cost of a synthetic (and I don't personally see the need for synthetics in these engines) it is not bad.
