RV8 Clutch Problem

Having failed to get the clutch to work properly on my Dax, I suspect that the slave cylinder operating rod is too short. The end instead of being rounded looks like its been hacked through in its past life. If anyone happens to have a rod lying around i would appreciate knowing how long it should be. Ta.

RE: RV8 Clutch Problem

Martin,

Should be rounded one end and larger mushroom on other. Assuming you have std slave cylinder (because they all look the same but have different pistons inside - RRover and Discovery have much deeper bore in piston which rod fits into) then rod should be 137.5mm long (just measued new one). Part number is UKC4489A and you can get one from your local MG-Rover dealer (MG RV - not too likely to be in stock though!

RE: RV8 Clutch Problem

You can actually change the rod with gearbox in situ if you got patience and thin fingers!! Remove the steel closing plate, and pull the clutch arm fully forward. You can then just about get in to prise the plastic retaining clip of the arm - careful though else you'll break the legs off the clip. Buy a new one when you get a new rod anyway coz the old one will be brittle and new ones are much easier to fit (and only pennies in the overall scheme of things!). In true Haynes fashion - re-assembly is the reverse of removal procedure (with loads of added swearing) - try to find an impliment to lodge the arm in it's furthest forward position so you can force the clip onto the arm.

RE: RV8 Clutch Problem

Well Russell, managed to get the rod out as you said and its only 130mm long, so a new rod should be the answer to the clutch problem.
V grateful for the advice.

RE: RV8 Clutch Problem

Do you have the right pivot post in the box? They come different lengths.

Boost it, if you can!

RE: RV8 Clutch Problem

But only one length as fitted to 2WD boxes. Others lengths are for different 4WD applications. Unlikely to have the wrong one if the box has never been apart.

RE: RV8 Clutch Problem

Hello Russ, I found different lengths for the LT77 TR7 5 speed and Rover V8 5 speed when I changed boxes on my 7. I had to remove the Rover box in order to change the pivot to suit a 7 box.

RE: RV8 Clutch Problem

Mike,

yes, you're right. Different lengths in different applications. I was assuming that the box had come with a V8 bell houdsing/engine in which case it's highly unlikely to have the wrong one fitted. Unless of course someone has changed it in it's previous usage. RV8 2WD version is 44mm from mating face of 'nut' to tip of ball but difficult to measure with box in situ.

RE: RV8 Clutch Problem

Thanks for the additional information. I'm hopeful that the problem will be sorted once I get the new rod. The gearbox came out of an SD1 and so should be standard. Just waiting for the part now , xmas is not a good time for getting spares quickly.
