rover V8 Canshaft Identification

I am stripping my Rover V8 to inspect, how can I tell what cam shaft is fitted, The engine appears to have been rebuilt so it may well have had a different cam fitted, there is some lettering cast into the cam as follows

20 CS or could be 20 C5
T5 1.5

or similar

any help would be appreciated

Thanks

RE: rover V8 Canshaft Identification

Hi there mad Cobra chap,

If the cam is an aftermarket item, they usually have some sort of ID engraved or stamped into the rear face of the rear bearing (the one you can't see untill you remove the cam). If it's a standard Rover cam, they are identified by a band of coloured paint around the shaft normally in front of the rear bearing or behind the front one. All factory cams come from the pretty much the same cam casting, hence casting numbers are not much use. Factory cams from different engines are all much the same as each other really.

See if you can find some better ID on the cam.

Russ

RE: rover V8 Canshaft Identification

Thanks for the info

I have just found time to remove the cam and there are indeed markings on the end as follows:-

3P270 | INJO | O |

These are stamped in three groups between 3 Radial lines

Any Ideas as to which cam this is?

That sounds more like the Piper BP270 and if you mail Piper they will send you the spec's with set-up info.

They reckon it's good for +25 horses, I had that ca in my 3.5 and it went well and not to radical

RE: rover V8 Canshaft Identification

Thanks for the info the 3 could easily be a B

In addition the engine appears to have been stripped down before the big end journals are perfect as are the shells (+10 thou)

A couple of the bores are a tad rusty as the engine had been stood for quite some time so I guess a couple of the valves would have been open, this will clean easily

There are slight steps at the top of all the bores, what are acceptable wear amounts and what should the ring gaps be. All the pistons have an 'A' stamped on the top.
