Steering column, SD1 or Sierra

I am about to stick the steering column on my AK. Its a 1986 SD1 column with no boss. I see some people use Sierra ones. Is there any preference (I seem to think there was some problem with fouling stalks on the SD1 column).

Obviously for the SVA I need to get hold of an SD1 boss + wheel. What do I need to get in terms of aftermarket boss ? I also want a Moto-Lita wheel, I see they do a 13, 14 and 15". Any problems with the 15" in terms of getting in and out ?

Thanks

Marcus

RE: Steering column, SD1 or Sierra

I've used a Granada steering column on mine and it works a treat. Indicators and wipers work from the correct switches on the stalks. Hardly original I know but it is a better solution than the bent stalks on an SD1 one in my opinion.

My original wheel (from the granada which passed SVA) is 14 inches and is "OK" to get in and out of. Bit of a squeeze but OK. Why not have a look at a complete column from a Granada complete with the steering wheel etc. Then you can "suck it and see"

Having said all that. I think that the bracketry would need to be altered on your tub. Mabye not such a good idea after all.

Marcus
Stick with the SD1 as your car has been built for this particular column, the stalks do not foul and they look much better than the Sierra.

Moto-Lita and Mountenay both do off the shelf bosses for SD1

The 13" Mountenay wheel fitted to my car in picture, passed the SVA no problem.

Hi Marcus sorry to have to tell you but if you told AK that you were going to fit the SD1 steering column, than you will have to stick with that choice. ** ** If you want to put the Sierra one on you will have to have the brackets cut off the scuttle frame and the correct ones re-welded into place. x( x( ** .

How did you get on with that timing light ???

RE: Steering column, SD1 or Sierra

Hi pal, I suspected this would be the case with the column. Seems fine though. I am literally going to wire up tonight (been far too busy at work over the last week). So will try the timing light. I will send you the 8mm pipe when I return it !

Ta.

RE: Steering column, SD1 or Sierra

Marcus.

I`ve used sd1 with 14" leather dished wheel, no probs with clearance and it`s fully adjustable as well, up and down and in and out (as the bishop said to the nun).
For sva you don`t need the boss as the original sd1 wheel fits straight on and as it`s type approved it cannot fail, I`m using one for mine , you are wellcome to have it once mine`s passed the test.
I did the same thing with my tiger 6 using vw wheel for the test,it`s all fully paded and legal, providing the column is collapsable, and the rover is, you should have no probs.

Tony.
