Drain plug tool for Getrag gearbox I was wondering what tool to use to remove the drain plug/filler plug on my Getrag gearbox. Apart from buying the correct tool from Jaguar, does anyone have any suggestions please? Also, am I correct in assuming that I should fill it up until oil comes out of the filler hole? How much oil do these boxes need? Thanks. Ian

RE: Drain plug tool for Getrag gearbox Ian...Yes I had exactly the same problem. The filler/drain plug is a right cow to get out. I ended up making my own device to remove them....it worked a treat..... I used a bolt (M10 I think) about 2" long and welded two nut on it. The head of the bold is 17mm across the flats. What you can then do, is put the head of the bolt into the hexagaon socket of the filler/drain plug and use a spanner on the nuts. The big problem I found was getting enough purchase on the hexagon socket without whatever I was using, jumping out. But by using this method, it worked...... You do need to make sure the hexagon socket in the plugs are clear...I used a screw driver to get all the crud out before undoing them. Hope this helps.

RE: Drain plug tool for Getrag gearbox Thanks JP and Dave. I found the tool JP mentioned in my local MDC but it was part of a set of 5 which they wanted a tenner for, so I thought I'd try and weld something up. Then in came Dave's response which saves me having to use my brain at all :+ I guess it's out with the TIG tonight and fire the beast up tomorrow. Cheers!
