Ford Windsor bellhousings

Does anybody out there know if the manual bellhousing for a Ford 302 Windsor will fit a 351 Windsor? Both have 6 holes, but I'm not in a position to trial-fit. If they do mate up OK, are there any implications on the clutch plate/mechanism I should be aware of?

Thanks. Ian

As far as I'm aware, the only difference between the 302 and 351 is the height of the cylinders. I would think the rear ends will be the same. Put a query on clubcobra.com.

RE: Ford Windsor bellhousings

Id agree with Simon on that (302/351 same) after reading my book, but I think I remember reading them changing in 68/69 to a different bolt pattern (6 as it is now)? Probably wrong though Im terrible at remembering things.

Best idea like Simon suggested is post a question on clubcobra, youll be amazed at how quick you get a response even at daft hours in their time....

RE: Ford Windsor bellhousings

Thanks for the replies.

I put a query on Club Cobra last night, plenty of replies! Basically the 302 one has the same bolt pattern and will fit OK. The problems arise with clutches - most 302 bellhousings are only big enough for a 157 tooth flywheel whereas the 351 would normally use a 164 tooth flywheel. So you'd be restricted on clutch size. I have been told that most of the really strong clutches are made for the 164 tooth flywheel, so that may be an issue. Also starter motor could cause a problem. The 302 one I've found is aluminium but I think I'll pass it up. Thanks again.

Simon, any news on the SVA issue? Ian Watsham

Hi Ian,

are you after a 351w bellhousing? I think the guy I bought my 351w off had a bellhousing he was trying to get rid of, presumably for the 351w. If its any intrest to you let me know and I will dig out his email address..

see ya

Ben

RE: Ford Windsor bellhousings

Hello Ben, thanks for your reply about the 351W bellhousing. I'm searching for one on behalf of my brother who needs one for an engine he bought recently. It must be a manual gearbox one though - would you be able to check with the guy please? Most useful would be if you could get a casting number off it then I could check if it's gonna be right. Last but not least it mustn't be too expensive
Cheers. Ian
