RE: Cosworth T5 gearbox to ford small block

Hello,

Some people told me that years ago, some people used the Cosworth T5 with SB in standart or lightly tuned engines, but they do not recomend it since the SB torque overpass the Torque that the gearbox accept, on the other hand the light weight of the Cobra helps the gearbox not to be broken very easily.

I know that Andy Burrons from GD did it long time ago, you can ask him, perhaps he could have the parts or know where to get it, but I do not think that him recomended to use it.

hi

i hope its posible as i was planing on doing the same thing, i shouldnt have thought torque would be a problem as most tuned cosworths have only a paddle cluth upgrade to help with upto 550 bhp, which comes with huge surges of turbo driven torque.{-} {-}

anyway you can pick up a used cossy box for £150 so even if it only lasts 10,000 miles it wont brake the bank }( }(

Hi,

I have 350 chevy 350bhp 405ft/lbs with a T5 box and never had any problems. The car gets abused every weekend!

All I can say is its not bhp that breaks gearboxs its ft/lbs.

Me thinks tuned cossy don't even come near chevy torque figures.

RE: Cosworth T5 gearbox to ford small block

hi

i got the burton power catalog through today and it has a peice relative to this, i quote "5 speed hd bog waner. One of the strongest boxes fitted to a production european ford car - it should be since it originated from the mustang."

i have also been looking on ebay us and there are a lot of borgs for sale for the 302.

for example ......

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33733

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eB...category=33733

so it must be posible i think the best way would be to get a cossy borg, and an american ford bell housing although i will have to do a bit more reserch on this...x( x(

Allan

Have fitted a T5 Cosworth to a 302 using bog standard mustang bellhousing. Gearbox sits a few degrees off vertical and you will need to get a ring machined to ensure gearbox sits firmly in the bellhousing as it is undersized compared to the American version.
Biggest problem will be sorting out clutch as input and output splines are different to American. Spent a lot of money at Real Steel to get bits sorted. Must admit I hav'nt run it yet but I contacted several people who have used one without problems before i invested.
Advice seems t be if you want to go much over 300 horse get a Tremec or American T5.

Mark

These prices/nos are 3 years old (I'm a slow builder)

BY360048 10.5" Pressure Plate £112
AZ935 10.5" clutch plate £72
BY463101 Flywheel £177

You will need various bolts etc. plus cover between block and bellhousing (BYD9ZZ-7007-A). I used a hydraulic clutch release bearing so can't advise on release bearing. However did discover that input shaft is Chevy not Ford sized. Also the Ford spigot bearing is no use to locate input shaft in crankshaft but I got a common bearing from local supplier that fitted perfectly, cost <£5 compared to £30 for Ford. Also need to be careful that your flywheel matches damper on front of crankshaft.

Suggest essential you take gearbox to Real Steel to check compatibility before parting with loads of cash.

Expect to be trying my set up in next month so can let you know if OK.

I've done it

Been running a cosworth T5 behind a Cleveland for a number of years now with no problems. Light weight and a very nice feel to the change. Used a 302 motorsport bell housing with a 302 flywheel (157 tooth). Fitted a hydraulic throw out release bearing from real steel who also do a clutch conversion kit with the correct bits in. All in all an easy fit which i am very pleased with.
