Sealing fuel sender in tank on GD

I have just completed a GD and have noticed a fuel smell when opening boot. It seem that the fuel sender which is mounted on top of the stainless tank and fixed with 6 self tappers is leaking - not around the gasket but around the screw heads - I had put blue hylomar around the screws but this no longer adheres to the sender base.

Any ideas?

Silicone on the threads and on the hole where the screws go in.

Hmmmmm...... you need to be very careful if you are using silicon or a silicon based product near petrol, as it has a very nasty habit of reaching with it and if that happens you will have to flush out the whole system. x( x( x(

I originally used silicone sealant and it did disolve in time , I flushed the tank to remove all traces - so then I tried the hylomar.

I had this and it was because my brother-in law who had fitted the sender (his only job!) had bent the apperture for the sender while fitting the sender. After a bit of levelling and proper use of blue silicone no more leaks.

Although this is now fixed, the guage only ever shows half full as a maximum. Anyone have similar problems?

Andy

I would not use silicon anywhere near the fuel tank uless you want goo blocking your filters. Like others, a good smear of hylomar or red hermetite on the gaslet faces and under the screw heads works well. Must admit I did not use self tappers but tapped the tank and used short allen bolts because they have flat biggish heads. Also bear in mind some of the smell may emanate from the area of the fuel filler hose or even the fuel pump and hoses if you have 'gone electric'.

Yup, been there Andy. The cause was a porous float on the sender, making it too heavy to float right up to the top of the tank. it took me ages to sus it out so I hope this helps

Cheers
