Prop Shaft

Hi All,

I have measured the distance between my gearbox flange and diff flange and it is 15.5 inch.
How long does the propshaft need to be for that length?
Presumably 11 inch will be too short?? ( I know it would be long enough for me but still

cheers

Ben

RE: Prop Shaft

Ben, I presume you have the splined front end piece of the prop shaft that slides into the back of your gearbox? You need to slide this all the way into the gearbox, then withdraw it 1/2" . Your propshaft including the rear u/j and coupling needs to be the length from the diff flange to the centre of the u/j at the front coupling that you have inserted into the gearbox.

The reason for the 1/2" withdrawal from the gearbox splines is to allow for any movement of the engine/gearbox on the ribber mounts.

I agree with the recommendation on RecoProp in Luton. They did mine many years ago and can use various couplings (Chevy to Jag, Jag to Ford etc.)

Contrary Mary

Ben, just tell the prop supplier and he will make you up a prop with sliding spline to suit the distance between axle and box flanges(15:5")on your set up, Eric.

Re: Prop Shaft

My Hawk 289 features a completely bespoke home-spun multi-link rear suspension. I owe a lot to Recoprop for making the drive shafts work between a Sierra 4x4 LSD diff and 1970s ex Lotus F1 uprights. Although they didn't design and build this solution, they were invaluable in getting it all to work. I have nothing but praise for them, and would recommend them wholeheartedly. Good value for money too.

Re: Prop Shaft

Contrary to my last message, I now have a major problem with Reco-prop. I thought they'd done a really good job and then went to get an MOT. The car failed 'cause of too much play in the rear wheel bearings.

Upon closer inspection, it was obvious that RP had left out a large shim from either side. On phoning them, they undertook a search of the workshop and found them an hour later.

They sent them in the post but it meant that for the second time in four weeks I had to completely strip out the rear suspension just to refit the shims.

I've written a complaint to them about their poor attention to detail, and the time they have cost me but they seem to be ignoring me.

Oh dear.

You have been warned.

Re: Prop Shaft

I just had a prop made by Proptech near Kidderminster - took 5 days and cost £70 cos they used one bit of my old shaft (circa £100 if they start from scratch). Havent driven it yet but it looks & fits perfect. i told them the distances from box to diff and they worked the rest out. No nonsence polite service and they know their stuff.

cheers
Andy
