| Which Gearbox? Right, Spec comming together. GD427 Jag. based model. Ford 302W in virtually stock tune. (may go performer manifold and carb) The on thing Im a bit stuck on is what gearbox to put with the Ford 302? I would like if possible to avoid paying £1300 odd for a new Tremec. Question: What have people used i.e Borg-Warner, Getrag etc and what vehicle donated them BMW jag etc. also what power are you pushing through it? We could do with a section on the website with information like this. Pulling together the great techy bits in Snake torque in one easy to search database. Thanks, Im lost on this one! Andy 1st the Garage, 2nd the engine 3rd the kids..doh sorry, GD427! :tu

| RE: Which Gearbox? Hi Andy. Why the 302? Why not a 351W if you want to go Ford? Gearbox, I've heard that the Tremec is a good box and can handle the torque. I've also heard that the Getrag from a Jag is a good box. Looking at it logically then all the other stuff from the Jag is OK so why not the gearbox? These can be obtained from scrapyards for about £150.00 I'm sure. HTH |

| RE: Which Gearbox? I have a 400hp, 440ft/lb 383 chevy through a bmw getrag 265 gearbox, 7000 miles, driven hard enough to twist a propshaft, nice gearchange, no problems with the box at all. I would guess it'd be fine behind a 302 cost £100 from wreckers, £120 to get it professionally rebuilt, rest of gearbox stuff from AK. The Jag version is also suitable, and uses similar ratios.

| RE: Which Gearbox? Vince, 302 because Im trying to strike a balance between "that V8 rumble" and "that pocket emptying petrol Bill!" I dont know what the running cost difference is between a 5 and 5.7ish ltr but in my thinking the smaller one must use less juice! Whats your setup? Ford? Good / bad experience? Thanks for replying. Andy 1st the Garage, 2nd the engine 3rd the kids..doh sorry, GD427!

| RE: Which Gearbox? Am I right in thinking that something like a 5.3 V12 XJS could provide the running gear and suitable gearbox for the build? Again looking at 230 ish BHP from standard tune Ford 302. Cheers Andy 1st the Garage, 2nd the engine 3rd the kids..doh sorry, GD427!

| RE: Which Gearbox? Andy, I have a 260bhp 302 mated to a Borg Warner T5. My donor was a 1988 Mustang but I believe the Sierra Cosworth used pretty much the same box (actually it was the slightly later T56 version). Power/Torque handling capability varies a bit depending on which version of the box you get (see http://66.96.130.106/archives/2000/0...p/index2.shtml for details). I like the box from an authenticity basis. I know other builders who have mated the 302 to the Toyoto Supra 3.5 Turbo box and rate it very highly. Regards Two Greens :7 |

| RE: Which Gearbox? If you are looking for economy then stop now. Build a 7 or some such. I've done a lot of research about Ford engines and am looking at upgrading my Rover V8 to a 351W as next years winter project |

| RE: Which Gearbox? Hey Vince, same plan as me, although it may be a year on.... I have my 351w at the moment but have you thought about what your gunna do to it to tune it up? Ive been thinking about either the edelbrock performer or the RPM package (apparently gives 400 horses).... Dont know how driveable it will be though... waddabout you? |
