RE: Hall effect sensor

I made my own sensor - originally I bought the magnetic one that has to be mounted within half a gnats cock of the fast moving propshaft bolts - this didn't seem like a great idea and there was nowhere solid to mount it, so I made up a bracket, bought a hall effect sensor from RS and some (4) weeny cobolt magnets which I set into the propshaft flange - all cost less than a fiver.

RE: Hall effect sensor

Ian,

I realise that it's easy to do the way you describe - I use mag and IR speed pickups everyday at work. I just wonder why people go to all the trouble of installing them when there's already one fitted to later LSD XJS diffs.

RE: Hall effect sensor

Russ, had a few too many so please excoooose any pore speling I read your reply again about the thingy inside the XJS diff to trigger off hte signal to the speedo. I have an XJ12 powerlok (1974 vintage) on my Christine, dy'rekkon it could be tweaked to include the thingy without removing the rear axle etc? I will still need an electronic speedo though, my old XJ12 mechanical one is no good as it is. If I can avoid the conversion to electronic by acquiring an original Jag electronic item of the Smith's style then I'd be happy. Any ideas please?
Stuart, what speedo are u using? Is your sender device compatible? I just don't want to waste 200 quid on something I don't need to

One reason for XS alcohol tonight - bought my lady a Pug 306 Cabriolet today, bright red, PininFarina badge etc, thought it would be a great car for her and never expected to enjoy it myself. Bloo*y hell whata laugh when I took it out on my own. If you can do what I did tonight in a 1 1/4 ton car with 135 bhp what the f**k will 300 odd horses be like in a 1 ton car and 115 dB. Can't f'n wait.

Think I should get some kip now, I f***** :P cheers, Ian {-} {-}

RE: Hall effect sensor

I now have a late xjs diff, but didn't when I built the car, hence the use of my own sender and now I have it I can't be bothered to change it.
I have Smiths (CAI) Telemetrix gauges which has specific connections for a hall effect sender, but the sender would work with anything that requires either square pulses to ground, or (with a pull-up) square(ish) pulses between the rails. The hall effect sensor I used has a very wide operating voltage range and high frequency operation - you also need to make sure you get a unipolar one with hysteresis (a gap between the point it switches from off to on and back to off) to stop spurious switching, high enough switching frequency and suitable sensitivity (ie quite sensitive!!)

RE: Hall effect sensor

dave

my gearbox is the same as yours, came from an 84 xjs 3.6. i am also trying to figure out how to use this hall effect switch- althougth in the xjs service book it is called a transducer. it must be possible as the speedo from the car was electronic as is the smiths guage i am intending to use.

if i find anymore info i will post it here

regards
