Main beam connection

Hi all

A quick question regarding whether it is legal to connect the main beam flash (i.e. when you pull the stalk back towards yourself !) through the ignition circuit so that it only works when ignition on and hopefully engine running.

I've wired the head light dipped beam through ignition so only side lights work when keys removed from ignition.

Also, do we have to worry about all this "dim-dip" relay wiring ? My donor was a 1991 registered Granada

Thanks

David

RE: Main beam connection

Hi David,
The high beam flash is an "optional extra". In my opinion it's best to have it fed via the ignition in an open-top car to prevent abuse by inquisitive fingers!

Dim dip is no longer a requirement. The dim dip can be achieved by relay-switched resistors, switchmode regulator, or a tricky relay that connects the headlamps in series.

The first two can simply be left out of circuit, the third requires a little more work.
I think Ford used the nice simple resistor method.

Simon
