Speedo Sender

Friends...

Has anyone any experience of fitting a sender from a Jaguar XJS (Getrag) gear box to a CA electronic speed.

I can not get mine working with this sender. I have tried various combinations of connections but nothing seems to make it work.

The sender has two wires coming out, one Yellow/Brown the other Black/Brown. it has TES 800 2621 stamped on it and 9/5 below that. It is marked as a SMITHS stamp, with a + and an S stamped on it. The Yellow/Brown seems to be the + and the Black/Brown seems to be the S.

So is it a magnetic sender...or a Hall effect sender.

Which ever it is does anyone know which wires in the Speedo wiring I should connect it to.

This really is driving me bonkers.:}

RE: Speedo Sender

Your best bet is to ring Greenguages 01639 732213 or 01639 732244 and speak to a guy there called Andy Baraclough. He's one of their techie guys and knows his stuff.

You may need to send both the sender and the Speedo back to Greeguages to get them recalibrated together.

Cheers,

Tony

RE: Speedo Sender

Not sure if it's inductive, Hall or magnetic (reed switch).

To test:
An inductive sensor will show a resistance between the two wires but not to the case. Putting the meter on mV AC range and rotating the wheels will show a voltage.

A reed sensor will show a short or open circuit between the two leads depending on the position of the magnets inside. Rotate wheels to check.

A Hall sensor requires power. Sometimes it's just plain 12V, other times it's a lower (regulated) voltage. I think the CAI speedo has this built in.
If the case of your transducer is not metal (or, IS metal but doesn't connect to the gearbox casing, it's not a Hall sensor.)
Rig up a little test circuit:
Connect a 9V PP3 battery (+), via a lamp (eg side repeater) to the terminal on the Hall sensor that you think is (+)
Connect 9V battery (-) directly to the sensor case.

Now, monitor the voltage (DC V) between the output terminal and battery (-) while rotating the wheels.
Repeat with meter connected between battery (+) and the output terminal.
You should see a definite switch between low and high voltages (low=less than 2V, high=more than 7V) at the output terminal.

If in doubt, repeat the test using the opposite wires as supply (+) and output.

Hope this helps - can't find Jag wiring diagram.

Simon
