Water pump questions...

I have just bought a "new" CSB for my AK. It has a short water pump fitted and I can't make up my mind if I should keep it (and buy new pulleys) or replace it with a new long water pump...

Is there any general differences between the long and short water pumps (besides the length of them)? Any pros or cons that could help me make up my mind?

/ Bowtie

RE: Water pump questions...

If you already have your pulleys, it might be something to consider. Long and short Water Pumps require (I think) a different pulley setup.

Could be wrong though!

Please ignore me!

You already know about the pulleys and I have had far too much to drink to be on the forum at this time of night!

Sorry!

RE: Water pump questions...

Hi Bowtie
The short water pump is usually fitted to marine engines.

I bought a marine crate with a short water pump and changed it for a long water pump and the new pulleys as I was finding difficulty in fitting the engine with the alternator in such a wierd place. You may find the long water pump is better as alternator brackets and position may be a problem.

RE: Water pump questions...

Hi there Brian is right about the alternator mounting. As a thought
Real steel sell an aluminium pump which is short but they do a converter kit to make it into a long version perhaps you could use this kit to convert your pump ???? it's worth a phone call
cheers
Paul

RE: Water pump questions...

I run a short water pump with no problems - alternator is mounted low down passenger side, I have a clearer upper engine bay and more space behind the radiator for air horns etc. There is no practical difference except the long pump allows the most common mounting of the alternator forward of the vee on the driver's side. It comes down to a) preference and b) economics. Is it cheaper to replace the pump or get the mounts that will align with the short pump and fit in your engine bay? (And plenty of SBC trucks/cars have used short pumps down the years)
