Discs & Pads Advice

Using standard discs & pads, I have warped 2 sets of front discs in a few thousand miles.

I need to change this setup for my next build at the outset.

I have looked at EBC grooved discs and EBC pads or Pagid pads, Anyone got any ideas on what worked for them, and suppliers?

Thanks

RE: Discs & Pads Advice

Unless you are using the track, you do not need the grooved disks by any stretch of the imagination. However if money no object, no reason why not either. EBC green stuff is great. You dont think so at first until they have bedded in, but then boy are they good. You dont get the black crap either, just brownish stuff, but a lot less of it.

RE: Discs & Pads Advice

I have done a couple of track days, although thats not the primary use of the car, and I never noticed a problem on track days - although it is probably where they got hot!

I agree that I didn't think I should need uprated discs for the application, but after warping a second set, I wonder if it'll be cost effective in the long run to upgrade rather than keep replacing???.....

RE: Discs & Pads Advice

I run my car on the street with an occasional open track or two throughout the year. I have 11" vented rotors in the front and plain 11" solid rotors in the rear. I recently changed to a pad from Porterfield here in the US. The pad is the R4-S and is made of carbon kevlar. This is perfect for street/track as it is very grabby, low dust and rotor friendly.

After two track events and about 5k of driving the pads still look like new.

Don't know if you have equivelant in the UK or if Porterfields are available there.

Below info is from http://www.porterfield-brakes.com/

R-4 Carbon Kevlar
Ten years old and still an outstanding race pad, the original R-4 Carbon Kevlar has proven to be versatile and a superior performing product. We have added two new compounds to compliment the R-4.

R-4 S: Street High-performance & Limited Competition
The high performance street pad of choice. Very high friction level even at cold temperatures.

R-4 E: Endurance Racing Pads with Longer Life
This endurance pad, with special formulation for long races, runs cool and wears longer than our regular R-4. Great for extended time events.

RE: Discs & Pads Advice

I think EBC Green pads and sports disks are well worth the money if thats any help.

If you tend to hold the car on the brakes at lights etc when they are hot then this can increase the chances of them warping. Could try holding the car on the hand brake from now on, if you don’t already, and see if that helps.

Had a 2.0i Nova a long time ago that I was going though set after set of disks with and someone told me that, it was fine from then on.

Cheers,
Andy

RE: Discs & Pads Advice

I am sure the disks and pads are well worth the money. However the standard disk is designed for a much heavier vehicle and under normal circumstances braking effort will be lower on the cobra.

Value for money is therefore evalated against what is required. I am surprised if disks are warping from road use. If this is a problem then there is a binding problem or something and as such a change of disk and pad is not a good cure.

I would still advocate my last post if you want it - why not. If you are tracking it then its got to be a consideration, if not then its not necessary and potentially it is paying more than is needed which at the end of the day is up to the individual.
