| Chevy 283 engine I know naarthing, naarthing about engines... well, almost. I have seen some very cheap Chevy 283 engines going, and whilst I know they are smaller than the 350, capacity wise (about 4.5 L instead of 5.7, which would lower my insurance costs...), I can't find out much more about them. Is it a small block engine, suitable for use in a Cobra? If so, could I upgrade later to a Chevy 350 without too much difficulty about engine mounts etc.? What kind of power output could it stretch to? Why do they appear to be much cheaper than 350 engines? Got to go fencing now... R -- Drive it like you stole it...

| RE: Chevy 283 engine The 283 is the base of probably one of the best drag engines ever conceived. They became very popular for this. They will scream their bollocks off. The only 283 to go for in my opinion is the 1964 - 67 Chevy II based block as it had thicker main bearing webs and cylinder walls, but they are rare (identified by large No 62 on side of block). Many were stroked to 307, but the factory 307 was superior and special pistons are needed to up the 283. Forget about stroking it, you are better starting with a 350 or similar. Mike |
