Is this suitable for sanding?

Seeing as I'd buy everything from Screwfix if I possibly could, can anyone tell me whether the following sanding block is suitable for beginning to sand the flash lines from my bodyshell?

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/...17445&ts=64323

If not, where can I get a suitable one from?

RE: Is this suitable for sanding?

Jeez,
I'm not sure I wanted everyone to see my arse whilst it was udergoing repair!! Nice picture from the front though, 7 years and not even polished. Want to buy my pepperpots until you can afford the wheels you want? Then I could get my wires!!

Does your bum look big in that photo?

I think if I bought your wheels I'd be too mean to replace them in the future, although my financial forecast is based on some pretty shaky calculations so I may well be interested.

RE: Is this suitable for sanding?

Hi Robin

For sanding flash lines, (and most other things) I'd recommend a "3M" sanding block. I see that Screwfix do one that they call simply a "Rubber sanding block" which, if not a genuine 3M, looks exactly the same so that should be fine.

The problem with the one you chose, (IMHO) is that it uses velcro to fasten the abrasive to the pad. To buy velcro backed abrasives is more costly, and I'm struggling to think of any wet & dry that uses velcro, so it wouldn't be much good on flash lines.

If you go for the 3M block, (which is what all the GRP finishers use in my boat yard by the way) it uses 1/4 of a standard sized sheet of sandpaper. Just make sure you tear the sheet up in the right direction! The sheets fold around the block and locate in slots at both ends that have metal spikes in them to grip the paper.

It's also a lot cheaper than the one you were looking at!

Current progress: 383 Chev being built in the USA, Tremec TKO in a box, and various bits on the shelf, but I've now got my tyres after a 3 month wait, and veeeeery cheap too!

Thanks for that... I shall add one to my already extensive Screwfix order...

...Just submitted my Tax Return online... couldn't find the box that lets me claim my Cobra against tax... strange...

RE: Is this suitable for polishing?

Hi dude, if you are ordering from 'screwyou direct', then check this line out :

http://www.screwfix.com/app/sfd/cat/...3474&id=101601

I spoke to Farecla directly who forwarded me the following advice :

http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/dc...ng_type=search

Farecla also sell polishing cloths which are pretty good.

Saying all that though, I still cant get the scratches out of my gel coat after rubbing down... (by using G3 then G10). I am told that G7 is the way to go... I will give that a try..

RE: Is this suitable for polishing?

Having finished Polishing the body I would advise you to buy or rent a polisher to do the body; saves a lot of time.

RE: Is this suitable for polishing?

any decent hire shop will have an orbital polisher for hire i couldnt have done without it for the sake of 20 quid for a weeks hire,it makes a real mess though spinning polish everywhere.
you can buy polishing mops from any machine mart shop
I found that some scratches couldnt be removed with any amount of polishing with farecla,i think the trick is to avoid rubbing large areas when removing the flash lines as it lessens the scratches in the first place
i tried the fairy liquid approach with fine wet and dry this helped but you are never going to achieve perfection,i have a pretty good finish but it took absolutely ages!!!:tu

RE: Is this suitable for polishing?

I bought a brand new tripple speed polisher from Ebay for about £30 I think... Definately take a look there before hiring one.
