Steering - number of turns lock to lock

My car (Unique Autocraft Python - Jag suspension, Fiesta mk1 rack, not power assisted) has just over 3.5 turns lock to lock, which seems to me to be too much - at Elvington eralier this year on some of the faster but tighter cornets I was twirling away like a gud 'un and still couldn't turn it fast enough! So, what do you guys have out there? I am thinking of going shopping for a quick Fiesta Mk1 rack (I assume there must be such an animal like that somewhere - maybe from rally specialists?) and want to get an idea of what you guys have in terms of number of turns on your cars.

Any input appreciated. Tks

RE: Steering - number of turns lock to lock

Hi,

Sierra Cosworth quick rack fitted which gives me one turn lock to lock. If you fit one it's advisable not to get twitchy on the motorway }(

Cheers,
Andy

Race racks would probably not be a good idea, as you will have to change the geometry to lighten up the steering at the front, which can be detrimental to the handling on a road car.

Circuits aren't generally built the same an airfield circuits, we had some relatively sharp corners at Elvington, so on a circuit, a 1.5 lock to lock is OK as you are only turning the wheel slightly, and more often than not won't acheive full lock. On an airfield, you will get more lock, so the shorter the lock, the more effort you will have to apply.

A generic 2.5 turns lock to lock would probably be your best bet, maybe go down to a 2 turn lock to lock.

My Son had a toy steering wheel which he used to spin furiously, making loads of go-faster noises, leaning into all the tight corners, perhaps running the government feels a bit like that. You make all the noises, but when you stop you haven't really gone anywhere.

Or fit power steering if you don’t want to lighten the front end.

RE: Steering - number of turns lock to lock

Thanks guys for all the advice. I will look into the rack from Transautosport and see what that is lock to lock. If I could get down to 3 turns it would be good.

RE: Steering - number of turns lock to lock

Just had a quick look in the demon tweeks catalouge and they sell the TAS racks. They quote them as between 2.2 and 2.7 turns L/L dpending on model of car. Cost is 144 quid for the fiesta but they also quote a kit at 96 quid if you want to get dirty pulling the rack to bits to save a bit more.
