Hot Starting

Hi,
First time on the forum and I was wondering if any one out there could help me?,realised a dream and bought my Dax cobra at Stoneleigh this year and have a had an excellent summer scaring myself discovering how many great roads there are in the north east of England. Unfortuantly I`ve also discovered something called "hot starting " or at least thats what I`ve been told is wrong with the car. After every drive once I`ve turned of the engine(ford 302) it seem that I have to sit for what seems like an eternity before I can star the car again (very embarising at my local garage!).
Does any one have any advice on how I can get over this problem?

Thanks,

Tim

RE: Hot Starting

Do a search on the forum, this has been covered plenty of times.

One solution is a remote starter solenoid, but I can't really see how this works.

Best solution may be to obtain a gear reduction starter (also called mini high-torque starter). I use one on the GD and even with a little 36Ah battery (Standard fit on a 1.3 Astra!) it throws the 350 Chevy over as if it was a motorcycle engine!

RE: Hot Starting

I have recently fitted a remote st. solenoid (350SBC) after experiencing this very problem and it has solved the problem. There are two methods of wiring this I have them printed out. The solenoid is a Durite item from Staff vehicle components with push button as well. Honest this method has most certainly cured all my hot start problems.

I did not go for mini hi torque starter as I have heard the heat soak can affect these though not as much, also I would have thought that you would have to reshim the new starter and to do this accurately surely engine has to come out to see the mashing of pinion and flywheel properly???

RE: Hot Starting

Tim
I assume that you try to 'hot start' the engine with 50% throttle, having not pumped the pedal first? My RV8 can be a pain to 'hot start' unless I do this, & then I have no problem at all -just a thought

Cheers

RE: Hot Starting

I used to have this trouble about 4 years ago, with my Holly and RV8.
I removed the automatic choke spring, starts first time now , even in the winter. Also another member had this starting trouble it was the condenser. The last thing you think of.

RE: Hot Starting

The remote solenoid does work, it dosent matter whether you understand it or not just think £7.50 vs £150 +. The latter is for a mini torque.

I have posted an explanation and diagrams of how it works about a month ago.

Best of luck
Mike

RE: Hot Starting

Thanks all for the advice,I`v been away so its the first time I have had time to respond. I did the search on the forum and came up with what had previously been suggested by others with the same problem.
Having checked what I have already got I find I have a remote solenoid fitted to the car, its not far from the exhaust manifold, should I move it? would that make a difference to problem?

Tim

RE: Hot Starting

Yes
The idea is that you keep the solenoid cool. For the price of the solenoid, use a new one when you reposition away from headers etc.

Use the wiring diagram I previously posted.

Hope it works for you.
