Warm Starting

Had my Cobra (Ford 351 Cleveland) for a few months now and having a blast. But I'm having some problems when warm starting. This seems to be a hot topic (no pun intended) on the forum but most queries relate to slow cranking.

My cranking speed is fine but it's just not firing up. Oddly, it's fine when starting within 5 or 10 minutes of stopping after a reasonable run but if it's left for between 30 mins and a couple of hours it mis-behaves. Then after a couple of hours it's fine again.

Someone suggested that the inlet manifold was getting hot and the fuel was evaporating before getting to the cylinder and suggested some kind of insulator between the manifold and the head.

Anyone out there having/had similar problems and a solution that works?

Cheers,

RE: Warm Starting

You are probably getting vapour lock. The fuel in the fuel lines is evaporating due to heat and the pump doesn't have anything to prime against.

Are you using a mechanical or electric pump. Where do the fuel lines run, are they braided or just rubber.

RE: Warm Starting

If as suggested it's vapour lock, and I suspect it will be.
Usually a couple of pumps on the loud pedal prior to cranking will usually help to get some fuel in the carb and into the cylinders upon cranking.
if you were suffereing with a low crank speed I'd suggest the remote starter solenoid fix that has been much talked about oin the forum recently.
It may be worth doing that too however as this would make more amps available to the coil at hot cranking.

RE: Warm Starting

Thanks for this.

The pump is mechanical and I checked the fuel pipe and found that it's braided along its entire length except for a 12" piece running up the side of the block which is just bare metal.

I'll get some insulating tape around it and see if that helps.

Cheers

RE: Warm Starting

Hi Guy, I had a similar problem to you with all the same symptoms you describe. So the day before I set off to tour around France and Spain x( x( x( I fitted the heat isolator plate that was suggested to you :} :} . Well after some 1600 miles roughly and no end of stop and starting I have not encountered this problem again at all :tu :tu :tu 100% cure to the problem. I bought the plate from Real Steal part No: BY97 £13.73. I did mod it slightly as it is for the holley :} :} :} which means it has 4 small holes for the chokes instead of just one big opening, but after cutting this out it is fine:tu :tu :tu.

Hope this helps.

Martin :tu :tu :tu
