After Market Valve covers

Seen a nice set of Valve covers from Summit I'd like to use but they don't have any holes for Breathers etc.

So question is....

Firstly how many holes do I need to make and what do I fill them with?

Do I need a PCV valve and a breather or do I just need at least one of them, going to need a filler tube/cap at least so is that 2 or three holes?

Secondly what about baffles, do I need them, what do they do and can I make one out of sheet steel and connect to base of breather/PCV valve.

Alternatively I've also seen a PCV valve that has a top that unscrews with an 'O' ring to allow for filling.

How about using one of these on one or both covers?

These and other questions..

James

Hi James.

2 holes, one in each. PCV c/w breather & baffle (all in one unit on one side. The other side should be connected to the PCV port on your carb.

Ooooops, forgot to mention that the valve sits in a rubber grommet in the hole.

The crankcase is ventilated by the 'vacuum' in the carb pulling gasses from the crankcase to be burned off with the air/fuel mixture. 'Fresh' air is then 'pulled in' through the PCV valve. The baffle inside the valve is to prevent oil from escaping from the rocker cover.

You are better to use a PCV valve on each rocker cover.

I side to PCV inlet on carb and the other PCV valve to outlet on underside of air filter.

Many thanks for clearing that up, always wondered what the breather was for if you had a PCV valve. I thought that the engine was effectively held under a vacumn through the connection to the carb.

So I need to find a breather that I can fit to one cover and a PCV valve on the other connected to the throttle body plus some grommets and a filler tube unless one of these can double up.

Many thanks

James

RE: After Market Valve covers

All the bits you need are in the Summitt catalogue.

I'm surprised they sell covers without provision for breathers and PCVs though.
Are they for strange race engines or something.

RE: After Market Valve covers

I'm building an order for Jegs at the moment and these will be the last bits I need before the intake/efi/dist/Accel DFI system which I'll order in the new year (need to save up as near £2000).

The covers I saw were cast ali items with an angled top so that the breathers are level, with 'Chevrolet' embossed across the top.
Think there Nascar racing items. They included a boss so that you could drill your own holes.
They don't list them in Jegs/Summit with breather holes but you can get them.

Have since spotted the price $350 so think I'll be going with some polished ali items at $100 including 1.22" holes & baffles, the PCV & breather are still separate though.

Still tempted to go for some AFR covers to go with the heads, polished ali with 'AFR' in bold across the top, $42 each +shipping/duty etc, but that may be showing off too much for my liking.

If you are fitting a Chevy engine, I have a pair of very nice 'Cobra Le Mans' covers for sale at £50

Now those I like, where did you get them from and do they do them unpainted?
