Should be a straight swap, but looking for any advice on best technique to use for removing the old one.

RE: Engine swap.

Hi Tony, is this an up grade or have you got problems with your old one x( x( x( . If it's any help I changed the gearbox on mine by putting the car up on axle stands, removing the prop and then with a trolley jack under neath undid the bell-housing and removed the gearbox complete with bell-housing from underneath.Once this is removed I would think it is quite simple to take the engine out with an engine hoist.

Good luck and see you soon. Martin :tu :tu :tu

If it's any help don't forget my brother in law lives near you and he has got a car ramp

RE: Engine swap.

Martin.

It`s an upgrade, Re-built 3.5 with big valve ported heads, crane cam,new lifters etc.re-bored and balanced.Hoping for about 220bhp-230bhp }( }(

Started off as a gearbox swap as the original was giving trouble with 5th gear but came accross this engine and couldn`t resist it so it`s now a complete engine and gearbox swap over.Old engine is fine just that the extra bhp was too good to pass and as I was replacing gearbox anyway it seemed a good time to do the lot.

Janet however can`t qiute understand how a dodgy gearbox has eascalated into a complete engine swap, still that`s women for you{-} {-}

Martin.

The female brain , it works in strange ways!!

Example:- For me to spend money on the Cobra that`s a bad thing (apparently)

For me to spend money to take Janet to New York for her birthday in November now that`s a good thing:} :} :} :}

Tony :tu :tu

Ps. Glad to hear the trip went well, see you at the next meeting.

RE: Engine swap.

Hi Tony, StuartH (the one who used to own the purple gel car) did a swap from a 3.5 to a 4.6. He posted some tips somewhere in the forum. I seem to remember he said to jack the back right up or something to make it easier to remove all in one go (could be wrong) ...

RE: Engine swap.

Tony,

yes I've done one (the first demo car - dark blue with gold stripes). Built and installed a 4.2 to replace the original 3.5 for the current owner. No real problem getting the engine in and out. Seperated engine and box in the car, the engine will move forward far enough to disengage from the gearbox splines. Don't think I even had to take the radiator out (if my memory's any good). Obviously remove as many ancillaries as you can (starter, alt, w/pump pulley and crank pulley) and take the exhaust manifold off to give yourself a bit more lateral clearance. It's then an easy lift out of the bonnet aperture (obviously with the bonnet removed).

Russ

ps I used my hydraulic crane.

RE: Engine swap.

This is bit different, but might be of help. I had Dave Brookes swap my standard Chevy unit for a 'breathed on' unit. My car is a Dax, but I think that similar things will apply. It didn't look like the engine would come out with the gearbox still on it. There was enough room to swing the engine forward to get it out cleanly.
The best method of lifting seemed to be block and tackle, as this helps you to swing the engine and also roll the car back and forward if you need to.
I'm not sure, but I would think the gearbox may be easier to remove underneath a lifted car, once the engine is out.
Dave had a Rover powered car in when I was there, and there was a great deal more room under the bonnet than mine, so I would think that you won't have too many problems with your swap.
Try giving Dave a call, I'm sure he can elaborate further.
Cheers,
Neil.
Ps should have swapped it for a Chevy!{-}
